Use Gemini in Chrome

With Gemini in Chrome, you can get AI assistance in your browser to easily get key takeaways, clarify concepts, find answers and more. To provide the most relevant responses, Gemini in Chrome uses content from your current browser tab. On a computer, you can also share up to 10 open tabs with Gemini.

What you need

Important: Gemini in Chrome is not available to all users at this time. We’re gradually releasing Gemini in Chrome, so it might not be available to you just yet.

To use Gemini in Chrome on your computer, you need to:

If you use Gemini in Chrome with a work or school Google Account, access must be enabled by your administrator. Learn more about using Gemini Apps with a work or school Google Account.

Chat with Gemini in Chrome

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top of your browser, click Gemini in Chrome .
    • You’ll need to opt in the first time you use Gemini in Chrome. To opt in, follow the onscreen instructions.
  3. In the text box, enter your question or request.

Tip: After you opt in to Gemini in Chrome , it’s added to your Mac menu bar or Windows system tray, and you can use keyboard shortcuts.

What you can do with Gemini in Chrome

After you opt in to Gemini in Chrome in the side panel, you can chat directly with Gemini. For example, try asking Gemini in Chrome to:

  • Summarize key takeaways from an article
  • Explain a complex topic in a different way
  • Help you test your knowledge of a new subject you’re learning
  • Modify a recipe to meet dietary needs
  • Compare or consolidate information across pages
  • Make recommendations based on your preferences
  • Complete multi-step actions on your behalf
  • Draft messages to send to others using Gmail
  • Look up your past photos and albums

Manage your chat with Gemini in Chrome

In Gemini in Chrome, you can:

  • Go Live & talk while you browse: at the bottom, click Go Live . Learn more about going Live with Gemini in Chrome.
  • Share or stop sharing a tab: in the text box, click Update tabs and select the tab you want to add or remove. A shared tab shows a Check mark .
  • Pop-out or dock Gemini in Chrome: at the top, click Pop-out chat or Dock to original tab .
  • Start a new chat: at the top, click Start new chat . If it’s not there, first click More options .
  • Switch between Gemini models: in the text box, click the model name , then select the model.
  • Find your recent Gemini chats: at the top, click More options .

Manage tabs shared with Gemini in Chrome

When you open Gemini in Chrome, the page content from your current tab is shared by default. Gemini uses that page content to respond. You can stop sharing your current tab at any time. Learn how Gemini in Chrome works with your data.

Stop sharing a tab
  1. In Gemini in Chrome, above the text box, click Show shared tabs .
  2. Next to the tab you want to stop sharing, click Remove tab .
    • When a tab is no longer shared, the glowing underline on the tab disappears.

Tip: If you start a new chat, your current tab is shared with Gemini by default. To change this, you can turn off Share current tab by default in your Chrome settings. Learn how to turn it off in Chrome settings.

Share a tab

In addition to your current tab, you can share up to 10 of your recent open tabs across your browser windows. Learn how Gemini in Chrome works with your data.

  1. At the top of your Chrome browser, click Gemini in Chrome .
  2. In the text box, click Add tabs .
  3. Select the tabs you want to add.
    • A shared tab shows a Check mark .
    • This shares the page content from the tabs you share, and Gemini uses it to respond.
    • When Gemini is using a page, its tab shows a glowing underline.

Tip: You can also search for and add open tabs by entering @ and selecting the tab.

When you share a Workspace webpage

Gemini may directly access your Workspace account to respond to you about a Workspace webpage (like docs.google.com) that you shared in Chrome. This makes sure that Gemini can, for example, refer to an entire Google Doc you’ve asked about instead of only what’s available within the tab. Manage Gemini in Chrome settings

Hide or show Gemini icon on browser & desktop
  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top, click More and then Settings.
  3. In the Settings menu, click AI innovations and then Gemini in Chrome .
    • If the menu is hidden, first click Menu .
  4. Under “Preferences,” turn the following settings on or off:
    • Show Gemini at the top of the browser
    • Show Gemini in Mac menu bar and turn on keyboard shortcut on Mac
    • Show Gemini in system tray and turn on keyboard shortcut on Windows

Tip: You can also right-click the top of your browser and click Unpin Gemini or Pin Gemini.

Manage permissions for Gemini in Chrome
  1. On your computer, open Chrome.
  2. At the top, click More and then Settings.
  3. In the Settings menu, click AI innovations and then Gemini in Chrome .
    • If the menu is hidden, first click Menu .
  4. Under “Permissions,” you can turn the following permissions on or off:
    • Precise location
    • Microphone
    • Share current tab by default
    • Let Gemini browse for you

Tip: If Precise location is on , Gemini in Chrome can access and use your precise location. If it’s off , Gemini in Chrome cannot access and use your precise location, and will only be able to derive an estimated location from your IP address.

Fix or report a problem & give feedback

If you can’t find or use Gemini in Chrome

Important: Gemini in Chrome is rolling out to users over time, so it may not be available in your country or territory yet.

If Gemini in Chrome is available in your country or territory, try these steps:

  1. Sign in to Chrome as an eligible user.
  2. Make sure you are in a supported country
    • Gemini in Chrome is available in select regions. If you are in a supported region but still can not use Gemini in Chrome, try the following steps:
      • Restart your browser and try again. If you recently traveled outside of these countries, your location may not have updated from your previous location.
      • Turn off your VPN. To do so, you often need to open the VPN app and select "Disconnect" or toggle a switch to "Off".
    • If the issue remains after you try all of the above, update to the next version of Chrome when it is available and check if the problem is fixed.

    If you still are having trouble accessing Gemini in Chrome, try the following steps:
    • Right-click the Gemini in Chrome side panel or floating chat box and select Reload.
    • Shut down virtualized environments: If you are accessing Chrome through a virtual machine, certain features may be restricted.
    • Check in with your system administrator: Make sure that use of Gemini in Chrome isn't disabled by your organization.
Report a problem or send feedback about Gemini in Chrome
  1. At the top of Gemini in Chrome, click More and then Settings & help and then Send feedback.
  2. Enter a description of the problem or your feedback.
  3. Optionally, add a screenshot to help us better understand the issue.
  4. Click Send.

Report or give feedback on Gemini’s response

Your feedback helps make Gemini Apps more helpful, accurate, and safe.

To give feedback on a response:

  1. Below Gemini’s response, click Good response or Bad response .
  2. Optionally, you can select a reason.
    • For example, If you get a response that’s inaccurate or that you feel is unsafe, you can select Not factually correct or Offensive / Unsafe, respectively.

To report a legal issue, under Gemini’s response, click Report legal issue .
