You can create and save Gems to customize responses in Gemini Apps to your specific needs.
What you need
- To create and use Gems with a personal Google Account, you must also be 13 (or the applicable age in your country) or over.
To use this feature, you must be signed in to Gemini Apps. Learn how to sign in to Gemini Apps.
Important: When you create or chat with a Gem, remember that you agreed to Google's Terms of Service, including the Prohibited Use Policy. Be sure not to violate others' rights. Use your discretion before you rely on, publish, or use content that Gemini Apps generate. Users with a work or school account may be subject to different terms. Create, use & manage Gems
Important:
- You can only create, edit, or delete custom Gems in the Gemini web app. You can use Gems in the Gemini web and mobile apps.
- For now, Gems can’t be used with Gemini Live.
- The Learning coach premade Gem doesn’t currently support language learning.
Create a Gem
Important: When you create a Gem in the Gemini web app, it will appear in the Gemini mobile app and the Gemini side panel in Google Workspace.
- On your phone or tablet, go to gemini.google.com.
- At the top, tap Menu
Explore Gems
.
- Tap New Gem.
- Enter a name for your Gem.
- Optional: Enter instructions for your Gem.
- Tip: Adding instructions is highly recommended.
- Tap Save.
Other optional steps to improve your Gem
Use Gemini to re-write your instructionsYou can add files to give your Gem more context or to reference specific docs in your chats with the Gem. Learn more about supported file types and limits.
After you add instructions, you can upload files. Under Knowledge, tap Add files .
- To upload a file from your device: tap Upload files

- To add a file from your Google Drive: tap Drive
.
- To add files from your Drive, you need to have Keep Activity on and connect Google Workspace to Gemini Apps. If it’s not connected, you'll get the option to connect it. Learn about your Gemini Apps and Google Workspace data.
- If you add a file from your Drive, Gemini will use the most recent version of the file. If you make changes to the file, these changes will be reflected in your Gem.
Tip:
- You may need to scroll down to find the Knowledge section.
- You can edit a Gem to remove a file or add more files later. Learn how to edit your Gem.
- In the text box on the right, enter a prompt to preview the Gem and make edits to the instructions as needed.
- Tap Update.
Use a Gem in a chat
- On your phone or tablet, open the Gemini mobile app
or go to gemini.google.com.
- At the top, tap Menu
Explore Gems

- Tap the Gem you want to use.
- In the text box at the bottom, enter your question or prompt.
- Tap Submit

Pin and unpin Gems
In the Gemini Apps menu, the Gems you have used or created most recently will appear at the top of your Gems. You can pin Gems to move them to the top.
In the Gemini mobile app- On your phone or tablet, open the Gemini mobile app

- At the top, tap Menu

- Under “Gems,” touch and hold the Gem you want to pin or unpin.
- If Gems aren't listed, first use or create a Gem.
- Tap Pin
or Unpin

- On your phone or tablet, go to gemini.google.com.
- At the top, tap Menu
.
- Under "Gems," tap the Gem you want to pin or unpin.
- If Gems aren't listed, use or create a Gem first.
- Next to the Gem, tap More
Pin
or Unpin

Edit a Gem
- On your phone or tablet, go to gemini.google.com.
- At the top, tap Menu
Explore Gems
.
- Under “Your Gems,” find the Gem that you want to edit.
- Tap Edit

- Make edits.
- Tap Update.
Delete a Gem
- On your phone or tablet, go to gemini.google.com.
- At the top, tap Menu
Explore Gems
.
- Under “Your Gems,” find the Gem that you want to delete.
- Tap More
Delete
.
Share a chat with a Gem or your Gem instructions
You can share Gems from Gemini Apps or a conversation you had using a Gem.
Important: Gems that are shared with you aren't automatically added to your Gem manager. Once you open the Gem and interact with it, it will be added under "My Gems".
Try experimental Gems
Experimental Gems allow you to try out early-stage Gemini features through Gems and share feedback. Experimental Gems are in development, and their quality and availability may vary. You can leave feedback to help us improve the overall experience.
Who can use experimental GemsCurrently, experimental Gems availability is limited to:
- The Gemini web app
- English
You can find experimental Gems in the Gems manager under Experiment.
Certain experimental Gems features work best when your Keep Activity is turned on. Some experimental Gems are not available if your Keep Activity setting is turned off.Why Gemini Apps might remove a Gem
Gemini Apps may remove Gems when our systems detect a possible violation of Google's Terms of Service, including the Prohibited Use Policy.
