Get word suggestions & fix mistakes

You can use suggestions to type faster.

Availability

The Gboard suggestions feature is available on Pixel 4a and later. This feature offers suggestions to supported languages only, and is available in English, French, German, Italian, and Spanish. Learn whether your language is supported.

Get started with Gboard

Important: Some of these steps work only on Android 7.0 and up. Learn how to check your Android version.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, install Gboard.
  2. Open any app that you can type with, like Gmail or Keep.
  3. Tap where you can enter text.
  4. Type a word. At the top of the keyboard, you’ll see suggestions:
    • If you see the word you want, tap it.
    • If you don’t like a suggested word, touch and hold it, and then drag the word to Trash Trash.

Use proofread with Gboard

Important: At this time, proofread with Gboard is only available in the US in English.

With proofread with Gboard, you can correct any entered text in your text box for typos, grammar, and punctuation in a single tap.

  1. Enter text.
  2. If proofreading errors are found, the "Fix it" chip appears on the suggestion bar. Tap Fix it to apply corrections to your text.
    • Optional: To remove the correction, tap Undo.
  3. If more proofreading suggestions are available, tap Fix it and then More fixes.

Add words to your dictionary

  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open any app that you can type with, like Gmail or Keep.
  2. Tap an area where you can enter text.
  3. Enter the word you want to add.
  4. Tap the word underlined in red.
  5. Tap Add to dictionary.
Tip: Misspelled words might be corrected as you type. To undo any corrections that may have been made automatically, tap Backspace Delete.

Change the types of suggestions you get

You can choose the types of suggestions you see, like next words or emojis.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open any app that you can type with, like Gmail or Keep.
  2. Tap where you can enter text.
  3. At the top of your keyboard, tap Open features menu Open features menu.
  4. Tap More More and then Settings Settings and then Text correction.
  5. Pick from the options.

Turn on Smart Compose suggestions (US only, English only)

You can turn on inline suggestions to make sentences easier to complete and reduce typos.
  1. On your Android phone or tablet, open any app that you can type with, like Gmail or Keep.
  2. Tap an area where you can enter text.
  3. At the top of your keyboard, tap Open features menu Open features menu.
  4. Tap More More and then Settings Settings and then Text correction.
  5. In the “Suggestions” section, turn on Smart Compose.

  • Android Messages
  • Google Hangouts and Chat
  • Facebook Messenger
  • LINE
  • Slack
  • Telegram
  • Verizon Messages
  • WhatsApp
