Fusion Tables is an experimental app.

Data entry

Validate data

Fusion Tables supports simple data validation when adding or changing data from a row or card layout. Only Text, Number, and Date/Time column types can be validated.

Enable data validation

You must be the owner or editor of a table to enable validation for a column.

  1. Select Edit > Change columns
  2. Choose the column you want to validate from the list.
  3. Check the "Validate data" checkbox.

Types of validation

Text: If the text column has a format specified, an error will display unless the entered data matches the format or is empty.

For example, if a column has the "YouTube, Vimeo, or Google Map" format, enabling data validation will require you to enter a valid <iframe> and make sure it contains a YouTube, Vimeo, or Google Maps URL. If you don't set a format for the column, values are not validated.

Number: An error will show if the entered data is not an integer, a decimal number, or empty.

Date/Time: The entered date must match the format specified or be empty. If you don't set a format for the column such as "Dec 24, 2008", the default format of "2008-12-24" is used for validation.

Validation errors

Errors appear below an invalid field when you leave that field or click the Save button. The save buttons will be disabled and the row cannot be saved until you correct the entry.

Disable data validation

  1. Select Edit > Change columns.
  2. Choose the column you want to change from the list.
  3. Uncheck the "Validate data" checkbox.

This feature is only available in the New look. It does not apply to changes made with the Fusion Tables API.

Drop down list

Data entry can be limited to specific values for a column using drop down list.

Configure a drop down list

You must be the owner or editor of a table to add drop down list data entry to a column.

  1. Select Edit > Change columns.
  2. Choose the column you want to change from the list.
  3. Enter a comma-separated list of values in the "List of drop-down items" text area.

The comma-separated list will accept single and double quotes around each entry. To give you some examples, the following lists will work:

  • library, bookstore, "client's collection"
  • bread, fruit, 'vegetable ("healthy stuff")', 'dessert ("yummy stuff")'
  • 2011-01-01,2012-01-01,2013-01-01
  • https://drive.google.com, https://www.google.com/fusiontables, https://mail.google.com
  • 10.75876,10.85827,10.87766, 10.85906

If data validation is enabled on the drop down list column, your list of values will be validated when you save the changes to the column.

This feature is only available in the New look. It does not apply to changes made with the Fusion Tables API.
