Change placemark icon

By default, point locations are shown on the map with a small red dotsmall red map dot icon. Here's how to change it.

1. Open the map styles dialog

In the New look:

  1. Click on the map tab you want to change.
  2. If you don't see a gray bar labeled "Configure map" above the map itself, click "Tools > Change map".
  3. If "Feature map" is not highlighted in red, click it.
  4. Click the "Change feature styles" button.
  5. Click "Points > Marker icon" if it's not already selected.

In Classic:

  1. Select "Visualize > Map".
  2. Click the "Configure styles" link above the map.
  3. Click "Points > Marker icon" if it's not already selected.

2. Change the placemark icon style

There are three ways to apply a map style that specifies icons.

Change icon for all points.

The simplest change is to replace the small red dot with another icon for all points shown on the map.

  1. Click "Fixed" if needed.
  2. Click the radio button next to "Use one icon"
  3. Select another icon from the pull-down menu.
  4. Click "Save".

There are ten icons available: small red map dot small yellow map dot small green map dot small blue map dot small purple map dot large_red large_yellow large_green large_blue large_purple

Apply an icon based on data.

You can define classes or buckets, and apply a marker icon to a point depending on which bucket it falls into.  This allows the icons to follow the values in a column of data.  If the data for a row changes, the icon used to display its location on the map will change, too.

  1. Click the "Buckets" tab at the top.
  2. Click the radio button next to "Divide into..."
  3. Select the column containing data from the pull-down menu.
  4. Adjust the number of buckets using the pull-down menu or + and - buttons.
  5. Enter the numbers that define each bucket. The bucket range starts with the low number on the left, and contains all numbers up to but not including the high number on the right.
  6. Select the icon for each bucket.
  7. Click "Save".

Specify an icon for each location.

You can specify the icon to be used to display each point by icon name. These names should all be in one column in the table. This gives the most complete control over what icon is used for each point.

  1. Click "Column."
  2. Select the column containing icon names from the pull-down menu.
  3. Click "Save".

There are approximately 200 recognized icon names, all shown on the map below.  Click an icon to find its name.

Tip: When the provided icon name is missing or not recognized, that point displays the default small red dot small_red icon.

Tip: There's also a tutorial on merging tables to apply map styles by column.
