Find data by filtering

To work with only some of a table's rows in a visualization, you can filter the data. Filtering is different in the Classic and New versions.

To find rows in the New look:

  1. Click Filter from any tab.
  2. Choose a column from the dropdown menu. A filter box is displayed on the left side.
  3. For a text column:
    • Check or un-check next to a value to include it in the rows to find.
    • Type all or part of a word into the text box and click Find to filter the list of values with a case-insensitive string match.  
  4. For a number column:
    • Enter a number for the bottom of the range to find, top of the range, or both. Either box can be left empty.
  5. Add more filters as needed.

As you create filters, Fusion Tables shows you the matching rows. Additionally, each filter box will update based on the current rows found. You can add or remove any filter and the number of matches changes.

Look for the query display "Showing...." below the menus to know exactly what Fusion Tables has found.

You can also click on a column name and choose Find... from the menu to add a filter.

The filter is applied to that tab only. When you create a new tab of a different type, the current filters will be copied.

To download only the rows you've found, choose File > Download.

Try it yourself!

We've provided some data for you: caterpillars collected by ecologists in Costa Rica.

The caterpillars come from several groups. To filter for all male CELT or LOHAMP caterpillars in the New look:

  1. Open the Astraptes demo table.
  2. Click Filter from any tab.
  3. Choose "herbivore species" from the dropdown menu. A filter box is displayed on the left side.
  4. Click on CELT and LOHAMP. This matches 24 rows.


  5. Click on Filter.
  6. Choose "sex" from the menu.
  7. Click "male." Now only 8 match.
  8. Click [+] and choose Add a map. The map shows only the 8 matching rows.


Try filtering the same data in Classic:

  1. Click the "options" link above the table or visualization. You see three tabs: Filter, Aggregate, and Create view.
  2. Click Filter
  3. Select the "herbivore species" column in the first dropdown menu.
  4. Select the "=" operator in the second menu. (E.G.,  >=, "starts with", or "contains")
  5. Type a value into the text box.
  6. Click Apply.

Except for "contains case insensitive," filters are case-sensitive and match exactly on capitalization. Only the rows that match the criteria are shown. You can add more filters, each of which is an "AND" condition: only those rows that satisfy all filters are shown.
