New Feature Launch: Mobile Device Heart Rate & Respiratory Rate Tracking
0
Heart rate and respiratory rate are two vital signs commonly used to assess your general health and wellness. Last month, we announced our plans to make tracking these metrics easier for all our users.

Starting today, we are rolling out the ability to measure your heart rate and respiratory rate* with Google Fit by using just your phone’s camera. These features are available first in the Google Fit app for Pixel phones, and will be expanding to more Android devices in the future.

Measuring your heart rate
Your heart rate gives you a snapshot of what's going on with your heart. Your heart beats faster when you’re active, but can also be elevated due to certain foods and drinks or if you’re feeling stressed or excited. You'll notice a lower heart rate when you’re still and relaxed.

With increased physical activity, the heart also becomes more efficient at pumping blood over time. Monitoring your heart rate at rest can help indicate changes in your fitness level.

Taking a reading is simple. For heart rate, you’ll need to hold your finger over your camera lens on the back of your phone and apply light pressure. We’ll measure your heart rate by detecting the pulse in your fingertip.

Measuring your respiratory rate
Respiratory rate is another important marker of your wellbeing. Generally, it is a stable metric but keeping track of your trend can help you spot any changes. For example, you may notice short-term changes in respiratory rate if you’re feeling stressed, anxious, or unwell.

To track your respiratory rate, you’ll need to prop up your phone on a stable surface, make sure you’re seated and breathing comfortably, and position your head and chest in the frame of your front facing camera. This will allow Google Fit to measure small movements in your chest and calculate your breaths per minute. For the most accurate readings, we recommend removing any items covering your face, including hats and masks, and wait a few minutes after you’ve been active.

The video streams used for measuring your heart rate and respiratory rate are fully processed in real time on your device. This means they are neither stored on your device nor uploaded to Google servers. With each measurement you have the option of saving your result to Google Fit, so you can monitor your trends over time.
