Infinite file permissions loop when select file -> "Copy To" in Google Files app

I just recently bought a hard drive to facilitate video and file transfer off of my Phone.

When I open the Google Files application, I select one of the files that I want to transfer and select the "three dots" icon in the upper-right-hand corner, and select "Copy To...".

It asks for permissions for me to write to the "SD Card"... okay... not totally accurate but whatever. I accept and it opens the file explorer into my Pixel. I navigate out and into the external hard drive.

I select "Use this folder", and it asks again for permissions to write there. I select yes.

Then it boots me back to the Files application, and asks for permissions to write to the SD card again... the whole loop repeats forever.

I have only selected one file to copy, and it never actually copies...

Help? I would think file management like this would be easy.

Pixel 5, Android 12.

I have the same problems as well on Pixel 5 with Android 12, the new version of Google Files app messed up on the infinite permission loop.
I temporarily resolved it by uninstalling the updates to the Files by Google app.
Hopefully they fix it soon, as I don't want to disable all automatic updates, and have to remember to roll back my files app whenever I access my thumb drive.

Same issue here. Uninstalling updates didn't fix it.

This has also broken write permissions for a bunch of other applications as well because they seem to use the Files By Google as their default way to get access.

By uninstalling updates and then using 'Files' instead of 'Files by Google' I am able to move things on and off of the USB drive now.
