Overview to Files by Google
0
Here are a few of my thoughts from a blog post you might find useful.

Files by Google is like the Marie Kondo of apps to help you clean up, find, and share files on your phone.

Sparking joy
Files by Google has a playfulness that simply makes it a joy to use. Launch the app and you’ll be welcomed by an interface as clear as a monk’s--and as playful as a monkey’s--mind to help you dump the clutter, browse file categories and share your important files. And when you do? The Files mascot makes a jump for joy, or plays a broom guitar, to celebrate your progress. The touch of humor eases the stress of file management, turning work into play that could earn even Mary Poppins’ nod of approval.

Clean
When you first launch the app, helpful instructions guide you to customize the app to your needs. You can choose what notifications to get and adjust permissions to alert you to unused apps. Use Files manually or let it work in the background and send notifications as needed.

Do with, not for
Apps should empower users, not overwhelm them. As Marie Kondo writes in Spark Joy, some clients expect her to simply do the work of discarding items for them. But that would not help her readers build the skills they need.

Likewise, Files doesn’t automatically delete unused apps, duplicate images, cache files, etc. Instead, it surfaces potential storage hogs by giving simple notifications and useful suggestions. The information is clear and concise to help users make the final informed decision.

As for the hidden cache files that nibble away at your storage? Files works in the background to keep track of those too. When needed, you’ll be alerted to the option to delete the temporary files that are no longer needed. And Files is smart enough to not bother you all the time like a pesky mosquito. Instead, it intelligently alerts you only when needed. Smart.

Find
Just as the Konmari Method emphasizes sorting by category, Files automatically assembles potential clutter into Downloads, Images, Videos and more to help you more quickly and efficiently work through your files.

To use the Browse function, launch Files and select Browse. Select a category, such as Downloads or Images and review the files. If you need to keep a file offline, keep it. If it is no longer important, delete it. Or, if you want to archive a file offline, tap and hold the file until you see the blue checkmark, select the : menu in the upper right, and choose “Backup to Google Drive.” Once the backup is complete, you can then delete the locally stored file to free up space.

Share
Not all files are to be tossed. Some may be useful to others and gain more value when shared. Files helps you share even without WiFi or mobile data. Using peer to peer (P2P) connections, you can choose to send and receive files with other Files users. Simply launch Files, select Share and follow the on-screen prompts and permission settings. (Note: make sure that the recipient already has Files installed on their phone if there is no current WiFi or data connection.) Recipients always have the option to reject or accept files so concerns about spam and privacy are acknowledged.

The subtle art of change
Notably, you’ll build better digital habits using Files. Just as the Konmari Method emphasizes keeping what brings joy to your life, Files by Google subtly builds skills in awareness and clarity. As you use the app, you may find yourself not cluttering your phone so much.

For example, if you discover you always had a lot of downloaded PDFs taking your storage, you may find yourself simply reading files online in the moment and moving on. And you no longer mindlessly tap download buttons to read it “someday” while creating the digital equivalent of a hoarder’s stack of newspapers. And for those files you do download, you’ll be able to more easily find them without the clutter. Less stress. More joy.

Not an end, but a beginning
Files by Google can simply be a means to an end: better file management and sharing without WiFi or data. But I think you’ll discover without the clutter distraction, you have more room for what’s more important in your life. And that’s something worth grabbing a broom guitar and playing your favourite song.
