Use USB storage devices

You can browse and manage files saved on a USB storage device.

You can only access your USB storage on a device with Android 7.0 (Nougat) and up.

Find files on a USB

  1. Connect a USB storage device to your Android device.
  2. On your Android device, open Files by Google Files by Google.
  3. You'll find a notification that says 'USB available'.
    Tip: If a notification doesn't open, remove the USB storage device and try again.
  4. Tap the storage device that you want to open and then Allow.
  5. To find files, scroll to 'Storage devices' and tap your USB storage device.

Manage files on a USB

You can move, copy, delete and rename files on your USB storage device.

Important: Make sure that your USB storage device is connected to your Android device.

Copy a file
  1. On your Android device, open Files by Google Files by Google.
  2. Under 'Storage devices', tap your USB storage device.
  3. Find the file you want to copy.
  4. Next to a file you want to copy, tap the Down arrow Down arrow. If you can't find the Down arrow Down arrow next to the files, tap List view List.
    • To copy one file: Tap the Down arrow Down arrow and then Copy to.
    • To copy multiple files:
      1. ​​Tap the Down arrow Down arrow and then Select.
      2. Next to each file that you want to copy, tick the circle.
      3. At the top, tap More More and then Copy to.
  5. Choose where you want to copy the file.
  6. Tap Copy here.
Move a file
  1. On your Android device, open Files by Google Files by Google.
  2. Under 'Storage devices', tap your USB storage device.
  3. Find the file that you want to move.
  4. Next to a file that you want to move, tap the Down arrow Down arrow. If you can't find the Down arrow Down arrow next to the files, tap List view List.
    • To move one file: Tap the Down arrow Down arrow and then Move to.
    • To move multiple files:
      1. ​​Tap the Down arrow Down arrow and then Select.
      2. Next to each file that you want to move, tick the circle.
      3. At the top, tap More More and then Move to.
  5. Choose where you want to move the file.
  6. Tap Move here.
