Use USB storage devices

You can browse files saved on USB storage devices.

Note: You can only access USB storage on a device with Android 7.0 (Nougat) and up.

Find files on a USB

  1. Connect a USB storage device to your Android device. A notification from Files appears.
  2. On your Android device, open the Files by Google app Files by Google.
  3. At the bottom, tap Browse Browse. You should find a notification that says "USB available."
    Note: If a notification doesn't appear, remove the USB storage device and try again.
  4. Tap the storage device you want to open.
  5. Tap Allow.

Manage files on a USB

You can move, copy, delete, rename, and share files from your USB storage to your Android device. You can also select multiple files to manage at once.

Note: Make sure your USB storage is connected to your Android device.

Copy a file
  1. On your Android device, open the Files by Google app Files by Google.
  2. At the bottom, tap Browse Browse.
  3. Tap the storage device you want to open.
  4. Find the file you want to copy.
    • To copy one file:
      1. ​​Tap the Down arrow Down arrowand then Copy to.
    • To copy multiple files:
      1. ​​Tap the Down arrow Down arrowand then Select.
      2. Next to each file you want to copy, check the circle.
      3. At the top, tap More Moreand then Copy to.
  5. Choose where you want to copy the file.
  6. Tap Copy here.
Move a file
  1. On your Android device, open the Files by Google app Files by Google.
  2. At the bottom, tap Browse Browse.
  3. Tap the storage device you want to open.
  4. Find the file you want to move.
    • To move one file:
      1. ​​Tap the Down arrow Down arrowand then Move to.
    • To move multiple files:
      1. ​​Tap the Down arrow Down arrowand then Select.
      2. Next to each file you want to move, check the circle.
      3. At the top, tap More Moreand then Move to.
  5. Choose where you want to move the file.
  6. Tap Move here.
Back up a file
  1. On your Android device, open the Files by Google app Files by Google.
  2. At the bottom, tap Browse Browse.
  3. Under "Categories," select the type of file you want to back up.
  4. Touch and hold the file you want to back up. To select multiple files, tap each additional file you want to back up.
  5. At the top, tap More Moreand then Back up to Google Drive.
Share a file
  1. On your Android device, open the Files by Google app Files by Google.
  2. At the bottom, tap Browse Browse.
  3. Tap the storage device you want to open.
  4. Find the file you want to share.
    • To share one file:
      1. ​​Tap the Down arrow Down arrowand then Share.
        Note: You can also open a file to view it, then copy it.
    • To share multiple files:
      1. ​​Tap the Down arrow Down arrowand then Select.
      2. Next to each file you want to share, check the circle.
      3. At the top, tap Share Share.
  5. Choose how you want to share the file.

You can also send files to people nearby without the internet.

Rename a file
  1. On your Android device, open the Files by Google app Files by Google.
  2. At the bottom, tap Browse Browse.
  3. Tap the storage device you want to open.
  4. Find the file you want to rename.
  5. ​​Tap the Down arrow Down arrowand then Rename.
    • If you haven't already given Files by Google permission to access your files, tap Allow.
  6. Enter the new name for your file.
  7. Tap OK.
Delete a file
  1. On your Android device, open the Files by Google app Files by Google.
  2. At the bottom, tap Browse Browse.
  3. Tap the storage device you want to open.
  4. Find the file you want to delete.
    • To delete one file:
      1. ​​Tap the Down arrow Down arrowand then Delete.
    • To delete multiple files:
      1. Tap the Down arrow Down arrowand then Select.
      2. Next to each file you want to delete, check the circle.
      3. At the top, tap Delete Share.
  5. Tap Delete.
