Perform a Google Fiber Self-Installation in Orange County

If you live in an Orange County property that contains multiple residences, such as an apartment building or condo complex, please follow these instructions to install Google Fiber using the provided Self-Installation Kit.

Our Installation Specialist has already installed an Ethernet plate and Fiber Jack in your home. To begin, you’ll need to locate the Ethernet wall plate.

Step 1: Locate the Ethernet wall plate and connect the Network Box

Though there may be multiple wall plates in your home, only one wall plate will be active for Fiber service. This wall plate should be located on the "main media wall" in the living room, typically the same wall where the TV/media cabinet is located. Usually located next to a 4-plug power outlet, the wall plate won't be labelled, indicating it's for Fiber service.

  1. Connect your Network Box to the top-most port of the wall plate (as shown in the image above) using the Ethernet cable provided within your Self-installation Kit.

  2. Plug in and connect the Network Box power cord to the outlet.plug google fiber network box to power outlet

The light on the front of your Network Box is red at first and blinks for up to 15 minutes before turning solid blue. Your Google Fiber service is now connected and working!

Troubleshooting tip: If the light on the Network Box is not solid blue after 15 minutes, unplug the power cord from the outlet, wait a few seconds, and then plug it back in. If the Network Box light still doesn't turn solid blue after another 15 minutes, please locate and check to see if your Fiber Jack is powered.

Step 2: Locate and power the Fiber Jack (if necessary)
  1. Locate your Fiber Jack to check to see if it's powered by the Ethernet cable. Although it may vary by different floor plans, you’ll find the Fiber Jack in your bedroom closet. There are two possible setups for your Fiber Jack unit:
    1. More than likely, your Fiber Jack is located outside the media panel, connected via the wall plate and visibly mounted on the wall.fiber jack outside panel orange county
    2. If your Fiber Jack isn't outside of the media panel, it may be located inside the media panel and will require a Phillips-head screwdriver to open.fiber jack inside panel orange county

  2. On the top right side of the Fiber Jack, carefully unplug the power cord. Ensure the Ethernet cable is connected to the top left side of the Fiber Jack.

The light on the front of your Fiber Jack should turn red at first and blink for up to 15 minutes before turning solid blue. Also, check to see if the solid blue light appears on the Network Box. Once you see the solid blue light on both devices, your Google Fiber service is connected and working!

Troubleshooting tips:

No light

  • The Fiber Jack isn't receiving power over Ethernet. This means the Network Box isn't plugged into the correct wall plate.
  1. Move the Network Box to a different wall plate and check the Fiber Jack light again.
    1. The Ethernet wall plate will likely be in the main living area, next to a 4-plug power outlet on the “main media wall” where the TV/media cabinet is located.
    2. Be sure to plug the Network Box into the top port of the wall plate.

Light is red

  • The Fiber Jack is receiving power over Ethernet. This means that the Network Box is plugged into the correct wall plate.
  1. Plug the power cord of the Fiber Jack back in and, if applicable, screw the panel door closed again.
  2. Wait 10-15 minutes to ensure the Network Box LED turns solid blue.
  3. Once solid blue, proceed with setting up the network.

No blue light

If the light on the Fiber Jack doesn't turn solid blue after 15 minutes, powercycle the Fiber Jack (Power over Ethernet):

  1. Unplug the Ethernet cable from the media panel, wait 30 seconds, and then plug it back in.

Be very careful when attempting to unplug the Ethernet cable; the fiber cable attached to the Fiber Jack is fragile and disrupting it can damage the fiber connection.
  2. Wait three to five minutes for the Fiber Jack to fully reboot and reconnect to the network.

If the light on the Fiber Jack still doesn't turn on or turn solid blue after another 15 minutes, please contact Google Fiber customer support.

Step 3: Connect to your Fiber Setup Wi-Fi network

Your Network Box creates a Wi-Fi network you'll use to complete your installation. For this step, you can use any device with Wi-Fi, such as a laptop, phone, or tablet.

Connect your device to your Fiber Setup Wi-Fi network. Your setup network name looks like one of the following examples:

If your address is: Your setup network name is:
123 East 68th Street GFiberSetup123
789 K Street, Apt. 5 GFiberSetup5

Step 4: Create your private Wi-Fi network
  1. Open a web browser or a new browser tab to be taken to our Google Fiber welcome screen. If you're not automatically redirected, visit

  2. Follow the on-screen steps to verify your Google Fiber account and set up your private Wi-Fi network. You'll be asked to create a new wireless network name (SSID). Your SSID is case-sensitive and must be between 8 to 32 characters. You should use only letters and numbers—don't use spaces or special characters, such as -, !, @, #, $, ?, *, etc. If your SSID is outside of this character limit, you may have connection issues.

  3. Take a note of your Wi-Fi network name and password.

  4. Disconnect from GFiberSetup and sign in to your new Wi-Fi network.

  5. After you've created your private Wi-Fi network, you can connect your other devices. Just go to the network settings on your devices and use your new network name and password to connect.

You're done! You can always change your Wi-Fi password or manage your network settings in your Fiber account.

Step 5: Install Fiber Phone (optional)

If you've completed Steps 1 through 5 to set up your Fiber network and have received a Fiber Phone Self-Installation Kit, you're ready to install Fiber Phone service.
