Battery backup alerts and troubleshooting

This article provides information to help you resolve common issues related to your battery backup unit. If you're unable to resolve an issue, contact Google Fiber customer support or APC customer support at 1-800-800-4272 for assistance.

Warnings and system faults

Depending on the issue, the battery backup unit produces audible warnings and/or warning icons on the front of the master backup unit.

Audible warnings

Following are the audible warnings you might hear from your battery backup unit. After determining what the sound means and what action to take, you can mute a specific alert warning or all audible warnings.

Sound Description
Four beeps every 30 seconds Backup unit is running on battery. If your Fiber equipment is plugged into the Battery Backup outlets, your Fiber Jack, Network Box, and Phone Box should continue to work until battery power is depleted.
Continuous beeping Low battery condition and battery run time is very low.
Continuous tone Battery backup outputs are overloaded.
Chirps for 1 minute every 5 hours Battery fails the automatic diagnostic test and should be replaced.

How to mute audible warnings

Button Description Action
Disable audible alarm caused by current audible event. Press and release the Mute button.
Disable/enable all audible alarms. Press and hold the Mute button for 2 seconds.

Display warnings

Icon Description
The UPS is operating on utility power, but is overloaded. Disconnect one of the items connected to the UPS. If the overload icon stops flashing, the UPS is no longer overloaded and will continue to operate normally.
The UPS is operating on battery power but is overloaded. Disconnect one of the items connected to the UPS. If the overload icon stops flashing, the UPS is no longer overloaded and will continue to operate normally.
The UPS is operating on utility power, but the battery is not functioning properly. Please contact APC customer support at 1+800-800-4272 to order a single replacement battery. If both the master unit and the battery backup unit are malfunctioning, contact GFiber customer support for information about returning and replacing your entire battery backup solution.
The UPS is operating on battery power and the battery power is getting low. Remove all non-essential equipment to optimize the remaining battery power for essential equipment. When possible, connect the UPS to utility power to recharge the battery.
The system has a fault. The fault number illuminates on the display. Refer to for an explanation of the message.
When the diagonal line through the speaker is illuminated, the audible alarm is turned off.
The battery is not connected or is nearing the end of its useful life; replace the battery.
The backup unit is supplying power to the devices connected to it, and will beep four times every 30 seconds. The battery fan will start.
Troubleshooting

This section provides solutions related to common battery backup connection problems. If you don't find a solution here, contact Google Fiber customer support or APC customer support at 1+800-800-4272.

Icon Possible cause Potential solution
Battery backup unit will not turn on The backup unit is disconnected from utility power. Make sure that the backup unit is securely connected to an AC outlet.
The circuit breaker has been tripped. Disconnect non-essential equipment and reset your circuit breaker; then reconnect your devices to the backup unit one at a time. If the circuit breaker is tripped again, disconnect the device that caused the break.
The internal battery of the battery backup unit is not connected. Disconnect the backup unit from the outlet it's plugged into; then the battery chamber and check that internal battery is green-side up and fully pushed into place.
Battery backup unit does not provide power to Fiber equipment during a utility power outage. Make sure that your Fiber equipment is plugged into the Battery Backup outlets. Disconnect your Fiber equipment from other outlets and re-connect to the Battery Backup outlets.
Make sure that the internal battery is installed green-side up. Disconnect the backup unit from the outlet it's plugged into; then the battery chamber and check that internal battery is green-side up and fully pushed into place.
Fiber device plugs are partially disconnected from the battery backup Battery Backup outlets. Make sure that all Fiber devices are fully inserted into the Battery Backup outlets.
The battery backup unit is operating on battery power while connected to utility power. The plug is partially disconnected from the wall outlet, the wall outlet is no longer receiving utility power, or the circuit breaker has been tripped. Make sure that the plug is fully inserted into the wall outlet and that the wall outlet is receiving utility power. (Check the wall outlet by plugging another device into it.)
The backup unit is performing an automated self-test. No action required.
The battery backup unit does not provide the expected amount of backup time. The battery backup outlets may be fully or improperly loaded. Disconnect non-essential devices from the Battery Backup outlets and connect them to Surge Only outlets.
The battery was recently discharged due to a power outage and has not fully recharged. Charge the battery cartridge for 16 hours.
The battery has reached the end of its useful life. Replace the battery. Please contact APC customer support at 1+800-800-4272 to order a new battery.
The Replace Battery indicator is illuminated. The battery has reached the end of its useful life. Replace the battery. Please contact APC customer support at 1+800-800-4272 to order a new battery.
The Overload indicator is illuminated. The equipment connected to the battery backup unit is drawing more power than the unit can provide. Disconnect non-essential equipment from the Battery Backup outlets and connect the equipment to the Surge Only outlets.
The System Fault indicator is illuminated, and all the front panel indicators are flashing. There is an internal fault. Determine which internal fault is represented by matching the number displayed on the front of the backup unit with the corresponding message fault message in the APC Back-UPS Pro Installation and Operation guide; then contact APC customer support at 1-800-800-4272 for assistance.
