Reconnect your battery backup unit

If you purchased a battery backup unit from us when you signed up for Google Fiber service or added Google Fiber Phone to your plan, our installation specialist set it up. This article provides instructions for disconnecting and reconnecting your battery backup unit, whether you're moving it to a new location or you've unplugged your devices from the unit and want to reconnect them.

Before disconnecting and reconnecting your battery backup unit, consider the following:

• Make sure there's a dedicated wall outlet available to plug the battery backup unit into. The unit cannot be plugged into a secondary power source such as a power strip or extension cord.
• Make sure there is adequate ventilation to avoid overheating the battery backup unit.
• Make sure that your Fiber Jack, Network Box, and Phone Box are close enough to be plugged into the battery backup unit.

If you're relocating your backup unit, you'll need to disconnect your devices from the unit and then reconnect them.

To disconnect your battery backup unit:

1. Press the On/Off button on the master backup unit (APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G) to turn it off.
2. Unplug the battery backup unit power cord from the wall outlet.
3. Disconnect the cable on the external battery pack from the master backup unit.
4. Move your battery backup unit to the new location — you're ready to reconnect!

To reconnect your battery backup unit:

1. Plug the cable from the external battery pack into the back of the master backup unit and secure it.
2. Plug the master battery backup power cord into a wall outlet.

3. Plug the power cords of your Fiber Jack, Network Box, and Phone Box into the area labeled Battery Backup on the back of the master unit.

   The Fiber Jack, Network Box, and Phone Box are the only devices that should be plugged into the Battery Backup outlet.

   Refer to the following illustration to make sure everything is plugged into the appropriate location on the back of the master backup device.

   

   Number	Outlet	Device types
   1	Battery Backup	Fiber Jack, Network Box, and Phone Box. This is the only area for Fiber devices.
   2	Master and Controlled by Master	• Master (top plug). Used for the master device, which is typically the main computer. • Controlled By (second plug). Supplies power and surge protection during an outage. Devices such as a monitor are typically connected here. If the master device goes into Sleep or Standby mode, power to this plug is disconnected. • Do not plug the Fiber Jack, Network Box, or Phone Box into these plugs.
   3	Controlled by Master	Surge protected outlets controlled by the Master outlet. These outlets are protected from electrical surges and will disconnect from utility power during a power outage or if the Master device goes into Sleep or Standby mode. • Do not plug the Fiber Jack, Network Box, or Phone Box into these plugs.
   4	Surge Only	Surge-protected outlets that provide surge protection even if the Back-UPS is off. Connect equipment such as TV Boxes, printers, and scanners that don't require battery backup protection. • Not for Fiber devices, except for a Fiber TV Box.

    

4. Finally, press the On/Off button on the primary backup unit (APC Back-UPS Pro BR1500G) to turn it on.
