Recording options details

For a single-show recording or single episode in a TV series, you can change only the Start Recording and End Recording options on the Record Options page.

Series Options
  • First Runs Only records only new shows the first time they air. Learn more about first run shows.
  • First Runs & Reruns records all episodes.
  • Reruns Only records all episodes except new episodes the first time they air.
Saving Options
  • Delete When Full deletes recordings of the show to make space for new recordings. Select this option for shows that are a lower priority for you.
  • Keep Forever saves recordings of the show until you delete them.

Use this setting selectively, because your storage device can fill up if you don't delete any recordings. If the storage device is full, you can't play live TV, because live TV is always recorded to allow you to pause and rewind the show. In this case, you need to manually delete recordings.

Save up to Set the maximum number of episodes to record. Depending the setting for Saving Options, the following occurs when the maximum is reached:
  • If you set Keep Forever, no more episodes of this show are recorded until you manually delete one of the existing recordings.

  • If you set Delete When Full, the oldest recording of this show is deleted after the newest recording is complete, to keep the number or recordings to the maximum you set.

Start Recording Select a number of minutes to start the recording before or after the show starts. Use this setting if you know a show sometimes starts early or late. Note that this setting could create a conflict with recordings of other shows just before this show.
End Recording Select a number of minutes to stop the recording before or after the show ends. Use this setting if you know a show sometimes ends early or late. Note that this setting could create a conflict with recordings for other shows just after this show.
Language Select the language you prefer for your recordings, if additional languages are available.
Limit to Channels To record the show only on specific channels, select All Channels, and then select the channels. Otherwise, leave the default setting, Any Channel.
About first run shows

A first run show is usually one that's aired for the first time. However, your DVR  might record a show as a "first run show" even though it's not airing for the first time, as follows:

  • You scheduled the recording after the show first aired. Your DVR will record an upcoming airing of the show, if it's within 28 days of the original airing.

  • If you've scheduled multiple recordings and there's a conflict with two first-run shows, your DVR will record a later airing of one of the shows, if possible.

  • If there's a power outage, service outage, equipment issue, or other reason why your DVR can't record the first airing of a show, it will record a later airing, if possible.

  • If the show is pre-empted for reasons such as a sporting event that runs long, an important news announcement, and so on, your DVR will still record the show if its air time changes by days or even weeks.
