Change the name of a device

Update the name of a computer or phone connected to your Google Fiber Wi-Fi in the network settings of your Google Fiber account.
If you have Google Wifi instead of a Network Box, you can use the Google Home app to manage your account.
If you’re currently using the Google Wifi app, you can download our Google Home app and learn about how to migrate your devices here.

Google Fiber displays the name of each device, such as a computer, tablet, phone, or game console, that connects to your network. If a device supplies a name when it connects, Google Fiber uses that name, but you can change it at any time.

To change the name of a device:

  1. If the device has never connected to the Google Fiber network, turn it on and connect it.

The device does not have to be connected at the time you change its name, but it must have been connected at least once to be displayed in the navigation pane.
  2. Sign in to Google Fiber using the email and password you use for your Google Fiber account.
  3. Select Network in the upper left corner. (If you don’t see it, click the navigation menu to display the selection.)
  4. In the navigation pane, select the device you want to rename.

If your screen does not look like the one below, you have an alternate version of this page. Refer to this overview of your network setting options.

Update the name of a non-Fiber device within your Fiber account.

  5. Enter a new name in the Name field; then click Apply.

Change the name of a non-Fiber device in the Network tab of your Fiber account

The name you assign is used by Google Fiber only. It does not affect the name of the device in any other context.

Although you can assign the same name to more than one device, it's easier to assign each device a unique name. If you've assigned the same name to two devices, disconnect one of them. The one that's dimmed in the navigation pane is disconnected.

If you have a device with which you sometimes use wirelessly and sometimes use an ethernet cable to connect, the network tab displays it as two separate devices. The top section of the navigation pane displays it as a wired device, and the Wi-Fi Devices section displays it as a wireless device. You can connect the device only one way at a time but because the Network tab displays devices indefinitely after they connect, the device can appear in both sections simultaneously. You can name each instance separately.
