​Perform a GFiber self-install with Google Wifi in Orange County

If you live in an Orange County apartment building or condo complex, here's how to set up and manage your GFiber network using a Google Wifi router.

Step 1: Find the Fiber Jack

Our installation specialist has already installed a Fiber Jack on your wall. That's where the internet signal enters your home. In this step, you'll locate the Fiber Jack and plug it into power.

1. Usually, you'll locate the Fiber Jack installed on a wall in your living room. Don’t see the Fiber Jack? It might be near a media panel.
   
   Your Fiber Jack may be located outside the media panel, connected via the wall plate and visibly mounted on the wall.
    
   If your Fiber Jack isn't outside of the media panel, it may be located inside the media panel and will require a Phillips-head screwdriver to open.
2. Next, connect the Fiber Jack power adapter from the Fiber Jack to the adjacent wall outlet. Your Fiber Jack LED light will turn red at first, then flflash blue or green for up to 15 minutes. When ready, your Fiber Jack LED light will turn a solid color.

Step 2: Connect your first Google Wifi point

1. Take your Google Wifi point out of the box and flip it over.
2. Connect the power adapter cord from your Google Wifi point to an outlet located close to your Fiber Jack.
   If you have a hidden Fiber Jack, connect your Google Wifi point to an Ethernet port in your living room. Avoid placing your Google Wifi point in your closet. See instructions below for locating your main media wall. 
   1. Though there may be multiple wall plates in your home, only one ethernet port will be active for GFiber service. This wall plate should be located on the "main media wall" in the living room, typically the same wall where the TV/media cabinet is located.
   2. Connect your Google Wifi point to the top-most port of the wall plate (as shown in the image below) using the Ethernet cable provided within your self-installation kit.

3. Plug in and connect the Google Wifi point power cord to an outlet.

4. Connect the ethernet cable from the green port on your Google Wifi point to the ethernet port on your Fiber Jack.

5. When connected properly, your Google Wifi point will slowly pulse blue to indicate it’s powered on and ready for setup. Google Wifi points work best when placed in an open space like on a shelf or TV stand.

Step 3: Download the Google Home app

You’ll need the Google Home app to set up your in-home wireless network and manage your devices.

1. Download the Google Home app for free on the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store.
2. Open the app and follow the on-screen instructions to set up your network.
3. You‘ll be prompted to set up a Home and sign into your account.
4. When prompted by the app, point your phone’s camera at the QR code (located at the bottom of the Google Wifi point) and follow the on-screen instructions.
5. If you have a hidden Fiber Jack and the Ethernet connection fails, try another Ethernet port. Repeat steps 1-4 until the Google Wifi point connects and the central ring emits a steady white light.

The app will ask you to personalize your Wi-Fi network name and password and walk you through the remaining additional steps.

Step 4: Place additional Google Wifi points (optional)

If you have multiple Google Wifi points, you can start placing them around your home after the first one is connected. We recommend placing additional Google Wifi points no more than two rooms apart from each other. Follow these steps in the app to add additional points.

If possible, place each Google Wifi point in an open space that’s off the ground, like on a shelf or TV stand.

Additional Google Wifi points only need to be connected to a power outlet and not your Fiber Jack.

Your Google Wifi will automatically update its software, which may take up to 10 minutes. Afterwards, your Google Wifi point(s) will restart. When the central ring emits a steady white light, your network is ready for use.

Common issues during self-installation

• If you just placed your order for your self-install kit to be shipped, it should arrive within 1 to 3 business days. We'll email you a tracking number once it ships.
• If you're still having trouble with your network, you can use our internet troubleshooter or contact GFiber customer support to help resolve your issue.

If you've already self-installed GFiber internet at your current address and you're moving to another location where it’s available, you can take your existing equipment to your new address and install it there.

Edit your network settings

• Google Wifi provides seamless coverage throughout your home. Google Wifi uses multiple Wifi points in different rooms for fast Wi-Fi in every corner of your home.
• On top of great coverage, your home utilizes our Network Assist feature. Network Assist actively manages and optimizes your Wi-Fi network behind the scenes so you don’t have to. However, you can still edit numerous Wi-Fi network settings, such as WAN settings, how to factory reset, device names, Wifi points, email notifications, and much more.

Change your Wi-Fi network name or password

• You can give your Wi-Fi network a name that is different from the setup name found on the bottom of your Wifi point. Network names must conform to the following guidelines:
  • Between 1 and 31 characters
  • No spaces at the beginning or end
• You can also customize your Wi-Fi network password. Passwords must conform to the following guidelines:
  • A combination of letters and numbers
  • Between 8 and 63 characters
  • No spaces at the beginning or end
  • No special characters

The Google Home app’s settings allows you to easily change your network name and/or password. Refer to Change Wi-Fi network name for the simple instructions.
