Hello. Is there a map stating all available Google Hotspots? I am planning to switch to Google Fi but the data plan is expensive for a student like me. The availability of hotspots would be my deciding factor to switch to Fi. Please do help me out. 1 Recommended Answer 22 Replies 37 Upvotes

Realistically, I have found the Wi-Fi locations to be quite limited. The most consistent I've found are public libraries (Seattle and  a few other cities). Most places I frequent require either a sign-in or accepting terms of service before connection is granted. It's great when it happens, but I don't count on it.

Better for avoiding cell data consumption is planning -- download music, podcasts, maps, etc when you have Wi-Fi at home, school, work, etc. Set synching to occur on Wi-Fi only for photos, contacts, etc. That should drop your cell data consumption substantially.

There are no "Google hotspots".  Open wifi networks are sensed by the phone and can be used if they have a decent signal quality.  Some public wifi networks may require s sign-in, such as agreeing to a terms of service blurb, so the connection may not be automatic.  Open wifi is very common these days and are offered by many shopping centers, major stores, supermarkets, subway stations (in NYC), railroad terminals, airports, libraries, doctor offices, hospitals, libraries, etc.

Yeah, this is much like asking the federal government for a map of all of the manholes in the United States.  There probably isn't a comprehensive list. :)

I am curious if Google Fi is pinning up secure tunnels via all Google WiFi installations.  I know this sounds crazy, almost conspiracy theory'ish, but I could see it happening.
