Migration of messages from Hangouts to Messages not working

Question

Google sent out email to Fi subscribers today saying that we now had to switch from Hangouts to another SMS app, recommended Messages, and claimed that if we migrated to Messages our conversation history would be migrated from Hangouts to Messages as part of the "onboarding process."
Well, I've already got messages and I already switched to it for my SMS a couple of weeks ago, so I was not prompted for any "onboarding process."
I asked Google support how to make the migration happen, and after being on chat with them for over two hours we are still not any closer than we were at the start. And, of course, they've wasted a ton of my time asking me to go through a bunch of generic troubleshooting steps, none of which helped.
Note that at the start of my chat with support, the person I was dealing with had no idea that this email had been sent out or that Google was promising to migrate people's conversations from Hangouts to Messages, so apparently Google has not bothered to train their support reps that this was coming.
Anyway, is anybody else running into this problem, and has anybody else come up with a solution for getting messages to migrate from Hangouts to Messages as Google claimed they would in the email they sent today?

Yes, the email was a bit premature. The feature is rolling out, but only a few people have it yet. That's the normal way Google doeas things, roll out to a few and see if everything is good, then roll out to more and check again, and then roll out to all. But the email shouldn't have gone out to people without a warning that the feature will be appearing over the next few weeks and to keep checking for the new setting to show up.
