Carrier roaming agreements 1 Recommended Answer 14 Replies 2 Upvotes

When it comes to the three carriers we have access to on the Fi network will Fi also connect to the carriers those three carriers have roaming agreements with? I Live in an area that's strong on Sprint so usually I hop onto that, but I have noticed T- Mobile according to Signal Spy and I know for a fact we don't have T-Mobile in West Virginia.  We do have a strong AT&T presence and I know that T-Mobile has a roaming agreement with AT&T.  So, really, what I want to know is if I'm in an area where I don't have coverage with the three carriers does Fi hop onto another carrier based on a roaming agreement provided by Sprint, T-Mobile, and US Cellular?

So far the only thing I've noticed is sometimes my Pixel hops onto T-Mobile.  We don't have any T-Mobile so I would assume it's probably AT&T with a roaming agreement.  I didn't take the time to test speed, I just thought it was interesting.  I've been using signal spy to check which carriers I hop onto, mostly because I'm a nerd for this kinda stuff.

But that's good info, thank you.

There is a thread on here as well as a Redit tread where Fi reps stated that "they are not provisioned to use the new LTE Band 71 600mhz" from Tmobile. So, if you are in an area where the new band has been enabled, Fi phones can not use it, even if your phones hardware supports it, as does the Pixel 3.

@SpeedingCheetah, do you have the link(s)?  Everything I've seen from here and Reddit is that band 71 is available to Google Fi users, just as much as they are available to other T-Mobile MVNOs.

You're correct that only the Pixel 3 series are capable of using band 71 due to the added hardware, but those on Google FI with Pixel 3's should have complete access to band 71.
