Cannot merge calls 0 Recommended Answers 44 Replies 16 Upvotes

When I am on an active phone call and somebody calls me, I am not able to merge that new call into the existing active call. When I answer the incoming call, the screen then says "In Call". I don't have any option to merge, I only have the option to swap between the calls. When I try to swap back to the original call, the call is dead and no one can hear me speaking. After I am done with the new incoming call and hang up it disconnects the original call as well and then I immediately get a call from an unknown number with no one on the other end. When I had AT&T their multiple call handling was much more elegant. they have options to merge and separate calls very easily and I am completely astounded that Google is struggling with this. Am I just completely missing something here? Why is this so hard?

Hello! Do you have the latest Phone app? You should have a MERGE option. https://support.google.com/phoneapp/answer/2811745?hl=en&ref_topic=7539039

Yes, I have the phone app enabled for auto updates and it was last updated in April. Unfortunately, your link to an article stating how to make a call is unhelpful. I'm pretty tech savvy (not that you should have to be to merge calls), so a simple guide about placing phone calls is not going to fix this one. Seems like a bug unless there is something else to check...?

The link I sent stated (you'll need to read all the way to the bottom):
  • To merge current calls into one conference call, tap Call merge .

My phone app is dated May 21st and I see the "merge" ICON. I'm guessing you haven't been pushed the latest version yet. I'm on 33.0.249138098

I know it had the one line at the bottom about merging calls, but from my screen shot in my first post, you can clearly see I don't have that button. Instead I have a blank space...Taylor Swift style...

In the play store I don't have an option to update the phone app...how do I force my phone to the latest version? Is that really the issue here?  A month old update and bam, no merged calls? Seems a little ridiculous. My version is below.

We are a Google Fi specific user forum and that Phone app isn't Fi specific so I can't answer your question. I suggest you either join the beta program or ask your question on the Pixel forum.

This is not a Pixel 3XL issue. It is a Google Fi issue. I switched to Google Fi from AT&T and now the multi call handling is complete trash and I can't merge calls or handle multiple calls anymore...is this just a bug that no one has a fix for?

When I had AT&T with the same phone, this worked fine...

Have you done the basic troubleshooting steps of clearing data/cache of the Phone app and Carrier Services, then rebooting your phone since switching from AT&T so the latest Fi data can be downloaded?

Yes. I cleared the cache and storage of both the phone app and carrier services. I also restarted my phone. It is still not working. If I am on the phone with someone and try to add a call, one of two things happens. If I am on wifi calling, the new call is merged automatically with the existing call as the new call rings, instead of putting the first call on hold like it should. Then, I have no way of splitting the calls apart, if I hang up at that point both calls are lost. If I am on the wireless phone network then the first call gets put on hold and I can merge, but once I merge, I can't split the calls apart again. It's very complicated to understand reading it. I need to talk to someone on the phone... Google Fi is failing at this big time.
