Lg g7 poor reception 0 Recommended Answers 21 Replies 16 Upvotes

How can I get quality coverage with the LG g7 or do I return it? It works great at my house and in Europe but out and about in the US I am always at 1 bar or sometimes 2 if I'm lucky. The calls are tinny and cut in and out. I've tried the codes to stick to specific carriers and that helps but that's not a solution that's a bandaid. Are other phones from fi like this?

Brandon,

Sorry to hear you're having trouble keeping signal. If it's not too private, where are you having this problem? It can take some time for Project Fi to learn which carrier is best in new areas, and in my experience forcing carriers like you are can help train it.

I don't personally have any experience with the Project Fi compatible LG models but I imagine they'll all be pretty comparable as far as signal reception, at least I don't recall hearing anything about poor reception on certain devices.

Thanks for your reply. I didn't realize there was a learning component or curve. That's helpful and interesting. I'm in the greater Chicago area when having this issue. In other places it seems pretty good. I saw on another form others complaining about reception on this device so trying to decide if I should return it within the return period. I suppose I can keep training it. Thanks.

Brandon,

It's probably safe to assume there are other Project Fi users in Chicago, and the networks are pretty well built out and mapped at this point. I've seen what you describe in more rural areas where only one carrier has decent coverage at any given time and the phone has to decide between holding on to minimal coverage with the hope it gets better, or hop between carriers constantly.

You might try contacting customer support but they'll probably want to do a device swap and that will likely push you past the return window.

I have the same phone and the exact same problem. I'm ready to return it. I don't want to "give up" on Fi and would like to try a different phone. Just not sure which phone to try. I've spent a lot of time on the phone with Fi support, but never get a resolution or an answer to why this is happening...

Same here.  They keep asking to send bug reports like I have the time to map dBm levels across my state.  If I'm directly under tower, it works.  If I move a few hundred feet away it drops off exponentially.  Bad antenna design is my guess until Google or LG speak up

So did you guys decide anything? Strange this that it works really well overseas. My guess is that it's the way Fi forces us to switch carriers in the US or something related. It seems the forced handoff between Sprint and T-Mobile causes more problems. I get the feeling I'm switching less overseas and that's why.

They escalated my case to a specialist and said I'd hear back in 24 hours. Never heard back but they're still working on it - supposedly. My 15-day return window is winding down so if I don't hear back within the next day or so, I'm just going to insist on returning it.

specialist tried and changed my primary carrier to TMobile.  Didn't work any better.  I had phone replaced, but didn't make a difference.  Too late to return too. So I'm stuck.

Even in downtown Boston signal sucks.  They told me my area didn't have strong coverage, but it was fine with Nexus 6p.  I asked them where it was strong and I'd go there and try... No response other than asking me to send more but reports. "Ain't nobody got time for that"

It’s certainly possible that during provisioning with towers, something didn’t work as it should.  You could try  deleting cache and data of the Project Fi app, let it reactivate and see if it does any better.  I recall someone having a issue with US Cellular (different phone) and that process fixed the reception issues.

I don't have a LG G6...unless that's a typo and you meant G7 Thinq?  In any case, I would be very upset if Fi sold me a phone that is only partially compatible with their Fi network...at a premium price, no less.
