To add to what Chuck said, the use of an SD card or other external storage to extend OS or internal storage is called "Adopting". As a heads up for the future, look for a device that supports "adoptable SD cards" if you wish to add SD cards in this way. Hope that helps.

The SD card on the Moto X4 does not support formatting for internal storage. I don't know of any way around this, or any plans to change this (in fact, Motorola recently released the Z3 play with this same limitation). The Motorola help article for the SD card on the X4 is available at: https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/answers/indevice_detail/a_id/123503/p/30,6720,10317. Motorola recently introduced a Moto X4 with 64GB of internal storage (US retail version in sterling blue, not the Android One version).

Then for me I paid for a pretty useless phone and added 128gb worth of storage for basically nothing because just the application count alone I use smashes the internal storage limitations. Figures.

Same here, for being a "pure" android phone, the system takes up 14 of my 32G, that doesn't leave a lot of room for apps.... now I find out the phone doesn't allow using an SD card as internal storage... I have had this phone about 2 years and have under 2G of space left. I left LG because of their design flaw they refuse to fix, now looks like I will leave Motorola because of the worthlessness of being a "pure" android phone when the system uses almost half the storage alone. Man I miss my Nexus 4.

Moto has 'adopted' this scheme across its upper line of phones, and may
(or may have already) for all. Their official line is that adoptable
storage file systems are not compatible with file-level encryption.
Don't know if that's true, or whether a little tweaking could make it
compatible, but with file-level encryption as their new security standard, look
for no more adoptable storage, at least in similar phone models.
