Google Fi is using the wrong MCC for MasterCard charges

Google Fi has been my preferred choice for cellular service. And work can cover this service so long as the charge to the business card is correctly identified as a cellular payment.

Unfortunately Google Fi seems to be showing up with Merchant Category Code 4899 - Cable, etc. Instead of 4814 - Tele communications. And Google Fi support has no idea what this means, because their suggestion has been to update my app or make my card the primary payment (even though I only have one card on autopay).

So this post is my attempt to get visibility so that others may comment any complaints and maybe some leader will elevate it so that the codes change.

Contact your credit card's support. They assign the category to the transaction.

I reviewed my Citibank Visa statement and the category for Google Fi transactions is Telephone Service.

I read your posts. Why would Google give different MCCs to different credit card companies?

Many reasons, but we wouldn't know. I just know many others and I are facing the same issue.

If Citi or Visa truly is different then I would guess that at some point they were all the same incorrect MCC. Then someone who should have received a category cashback multiplier (or miles bonus) for cell phone payments didn't get the bonus. They probably complained and someone changed how the transaction was invoiced allowing for the bank to apply the bonus correctly based off the now corrected MCC.

Though I can't verify that anyone actually sees the correct MCC. You say your citi visa does, but I have seen no proof.
