Can't get RCS to work over WiFi between two Pixel 3 phones on Google Fi. 1 Recommended Answer 6 Replies 12 Upvotes

My wife and I both have Pixel 3 phones on Google Fi. The chat feature for RCS is activated within the Messages app on both our phones. However, when we are both at home on WiFi, it will only send a text as SMS. When one of us turns off WiFI and uses the data network (Tmobile), the RCS chat features work. Anyone else having an issue with RCS over WiFi only?

Hello - that is an odd issue. I would recommend you both clear data and cache on the Messages and Carrier Services applications. I bet that will solve the issue.

I'm having a similar issue. For me, RCS chat won't work when I'm connected to WiFi at my work but it does work in other locations. If I disconnect from WiFi and use data, I can use RCS at work. When I'm at home on WiFi or on other WiFi networks, it works. Is there a possibility that certain WiFi networks have trouble with RCS?

I don't have this issue. Both my wife and I have Pixel 3's and RCS works fine over Wifi. If you're connected to a work or public Wifi network and RCS isn't working, my guess is there is some kind of web filtering applied that is blocking the RCS traffic. To test, you could try enabling the enhanced VPN so all of your traffic flows through Google's servers. This would bypass whatever filtering the Wifi network you're connected to has in place.

I was hoping that would be the solution but it wasn't. When I turned on the VPN, it told me that WiFi wasn't working (which it was) and switched me over to data. I'm a big stickler on data so that is not the solution I want. My work network must be blocking RCS traffic and I'll probably just have to wait and see if they ever change it. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi there,
From what I understand, there are some considerations for Network Administrators when it comes to things like RCS. It may not be a supported protocol on the routers your company uses behind its WiFi network. If this happens when you are at home, I would call your ISP and ask them if you can change a setting to allow for RCS. It also could be a matter of firewall ports. If I remember correctly I think I saw a friend of mine's RCS traffic when I ran a TCP dump of my own WiFi network at home. So if you know a thing or two about networking (or someone who does), and this is your network, good old fashioned TCP dumping may help find the problem. I am not sure what the traffic looks like though, if its HTTPS, TCP or UDP on the packet level. Still kind of new to RCS myself.
