Check your voicemail in the Google Fi app rather than the standard iOS voicemail app.

If you didn’t turn on your contact permissions during setup, you can do so at any time. This lets you see who your voicemails are from.

  1. Go to your iPhone Settings.
  2. In the Settings menu, tap Google Fi.
  3. Turn on Contacts.

Record a voicemail greeting

You can record a voicemail greeting that’s up to 40 seconds long. Make sure your Google Fi app is on the latest version.

  1. Open the Google Fi app.
  2. In the "Home" tab, under "Phone settings," tap Voicemail and then Manage greeting.
  3. If the app asks for permission to record audio, tap OK.
  4. Tap the microphone.
  5. To save your greeting, tap Keep or Redo to record it again.
  6. Name your greeting and tap Save.

Set a voicemail PIN

To access your voicemail by phone, you need to set a voicemail PIN.

  1. Open the Google Fi app.
  2. In the "Home" tab, under "Phone settings," tap Voicemail and then Your PIN.
  3. Enter your PIN and tap Save.

Turn on voicemail SMS

You have the option to receive your voicemails by text message. This option is typically not recommended if you’re using the Fi app to check your voicemail.

  1. Open the Google Fi app.
  2. In the "Home" tab, under "Phone settings," tap Voicemail.
  3. Turn on Voicemail by texts.

Set up Live Voicemail

A new feature in iOS 17 called Live Voicemail lets you read or listen to a voicemail while a caller leaves it. A transcript of the call appears on your screen. You can also choose to answer the phone in the middle of the voicemail.

To set it up:

  1. Go to your iPhone Settings.
  2. In the Settings menu, tap Phone and then Live Voicemail.
  3. To turn it off or on, tap Live Voicemail.

Tip:

  • Even if you are going to use Live Voicemail you must still set up Google Fi voicemail.
  • If the iPhone is online, on iOS 17 or above, the iOS phone app receives the voicemail. If it’s offline, the Google Fi app receives the voicemail.
