Shared YouTube TV memberships & family groups

Create a family group to share YouTube TV—as well as other Google apps and services—with up to 5 other people.

How family groups work on YouTube TV

  • If you've purchased a YouTube TV membership, you can create a family group to share your membership with up to 5 people at no additional cost. When you create a family group, you become the family manager.
  • As the family manager, you can invite family members (ages 13+) to join your family group.
  • As a family group member, you can build your own personal library of content in YouTube TV. Your viewing preferences and DVR are all your own—we won't share your library or watch history with your family group.
  • Sharing YouTube TV as part of a family group also lets you share other Google services with the same people. Learn more about family groups on Google

Manage a family group

Add family members

If you're the family manager, you can invite up to 5 people to your family group. New family members must be 13 or older, have a Google account, and live in the same household as you. If someone leaves your family group or your invitation expires, you can send additional invitations. If you have any pending invitations, you can cancel them to invite someone else.
Add family members:
  1. Sign in to YouTube TV.
  2. Select your profile photo > Settings  > Family sharing .
  3. Select Set up.
  4. Type the email address or phone number of the person you want to invite.
  5. Select Send. You'll get an email notification when someone joins your family.
Note: The family members you invite will see your name, photo, and email address.

Remove family members

If you're the family manager, you can remove people from your family group at any time.

When you remove someone from your family group:

  • The person you've removed will still keep their Google account.
  • The person you've removed will get an email notification letting them know they've been removed. Other family group members will also be notified.
  • The person you've removed will lose access to YouTube TV.

Remove someone from your family group:

  1. Sign in to YouTube TV.
  2. Select your profile photo > Settings  > Family sharing .
  3. Select Manage.
  4. Click the X next to the family group member you want to remove.

Delete a family group

To delete a family group:

  1. Sign in to YouTube TV.
  2. Select your profile photo > Settings  > Family sharing .
  3. Select Manage.
  4. Select Delete your family group
  5. Enter your password, then select Confirm
Note: If you delete your family group, you'll only be able to create or join another family group one more time in the next 12 months.

Join or leave a family group

Join a family group

If the family manager with a YouTube TV membership has invited you to join the family group, you'll get an email invitation. Follow the instructions in the invitation to join the family group.

The fine print:

  • To join a family group, you must be over 13-years-old and have a Google account.
  • You can access your own library, recordings, and personalized recommendations. Your viewing preferences are all your own—we won't share your library or watch history across accounts.
  • You can only be part of one family group at a time. If you’re invited to a different family group (for YouTube TV or another Google product), you’ll have to leave your family group to change families.
  • Google Apps for Business (G Suite) accounts are not eligible for family groups.

Leave a family group

When you leave a family group, you'll keep your Google account but will lose access to YouTube TV. Your preferences will be saved in case you restart at a later date.

Leave your family group:

  1. Sign in to YouTube TV.
  2. Select your profile photo > Settings  > Family sharing
  3. Next to "Family sharing," select Manage.
  4. Select Leave your family group
  5. Enter your password, then select Confirm. Your family manager will get an email notification that you've left the family group.

Note: If you leave your family group, you can accept an invitation to join a different family group or create your own group. However, you can only switch families once every 12 months. If you leave a family group and join a new one, you won't be able to join another family group for 12 months.

Locations & simultaneous streaming

Location requirements

Location requirements work the same if you're sharing your YouTube TV membership with a family group. The family manager sets the home area, and all family members must primarily live in the same household.

All family group members need to periodically use YouTube TV in your home location to keep access. If you don’t, the family manager will either have to change the family's home location or you'll need to get your own individual membership.

Note: If you're using YouTube TV while traveling, you'll get access to certain programs based on your location. Learn more about using YouTube TV while traveling

Simultaneous streaming

Family group members can use YouTube TV on up to three separate devices at the same time. Note that if one family member is watching YouTube TV on both a computer and a mobile device, this counts as two of the three available devices—even though they’re being used by the same account.

If you're a family member whose family cancels their YouTube TV membership, you can sign up for an individual membership. To do this, leave your family group and then sign up for YouTube TV with your own Google account.
