Join a group tour as an Explorer

This article is for Explorers following a Guide on a tour. Guides go to Guide a group tour.

As an Explorer, you follow a Guide (usually the teacher) who is leading a group tour. You can’t join a group tour without a Guide. Only a Guide can lead a group tour.

Types of tours

  • Virtual-reality (VR) tour—Use mobile devices and VR viewers to virtually follow your Guide in an art gallery or museum, swim underwater, or navigate outer space, without leaving the classroom.
  • Augmented reality (AR) tour—Use mobile devices to follow your Guide as they bring virtual objects into the classroom. You can see and walk around 3D objects as if they were physically in the classroom.

Exploring a tour

Before you begin

  • Get the Expeditions app—If your school uses managed devices, your Guide or the school administrator can send the app to your device. Or, you can download the Android app from Google Play or the Apple® iOS® app from the App Store®. For more details, see Get the Expeditions app.
  • Network—Your Guide sets up the network connection so that the Guide and all Explorers are on the same Wi-Fi network.

Explore a VR tour

When you open the Expeditions app, you’ll see 3 tabs at the bottom—Discover, Library, and Class

As your Guide leads the tour, they can focus on a particular scene, highlight points of interest, or draw on a scene.

  1. When your Guide tells you, tap Expeditions Expeditions and then Class.

Note: If you don’t see a guide, a group tour might not be started. Ask your Guide.

  2. When you see a Guide appear, tap Join.

  3. Check the details of the on-screen message and if correct, tap Join.

  4. Place your phone in the viewer.

If you don’t have a VR viewer, tap Full screen Full screen to view the tour in Full-screen mode.

  5. Follow your Guide’s instructions.

If you see Paused on your screen, your Guide has paused the tour. You'll see the scene again when your Guide taps Start.

  6. Tap Close Close to leave the group tour.

Explore an AR tour

Your Guide sets up the classroom for an AR tour by placing printed markers around the room. As Explorers, you and your classmates divide into groups with a group standing around a marker. Your Guide can move the objects so you can walk around the object, resize objects, and create a spotlight on objects in AR tours.

  1. (Optional) Insert your device into a selfie stick.
  2. When your Guide tells you, tap Expeditions Expeditions and then Class.

Note: If you don’t see a guide, a group tour might not be started. Ask your Guide.

  3. When you see a Guide appear, tap Join.

  4. Check the details of the on-screen message and if correct, tap Join.

  5. Stand in front of one of the printed markers in the classroom.
  6. Point your device camera at the object when your Guide instructs.

Note: If your phone doesn’t have AR, you can still view the AR objects in 2D mode.
You’ll just see the objects on your screen, but not in AR.

  7. Follow your Guide’s instructions.

If you see Paused on your screen, your Guide has paused the tour. You'll see the scene again when your Guide taps Start.

  8. Tap Close Close to leave the group tour.
