Why are students able to see comments I write on their essay before I return it to them?
0
I am trying to give feedback as I grade their essays. I am writing private comments and have not yet returned the work to the students, but they are already responding to the comments. I don't want them thinking that I am asking them to fix the work, as this is their final draft.

Hi Bonnie,

Thanks for visiting the Google Classroom Help Forum!

Students can see your feedback as comments only after you return their work. So, please make sure that you’re following the same procedure mentioned in this article to give feedback on assignments.

In addition to that, please ensure that you’re grading or returning assignments as per the instructions mentioned in this article.

To replicate this from our end, we would need to know whether you're returning assignments from the student work page or from the grading tool page. Here is the support page for more information.

Hope this helps!

Regards,
Kobe

This is happening. I just posted a private comment on a student's essay about her using personal pronouns. I did not return the essay, just went on to the next student, and I received an email stating she replied to the message. I was in viewing mode. I am using the grading feature on the side of the essay, as I am grading with a rubric.

The exact thing is happening to me. My students can se my comments in google docs (posted as a task with a seperate copy for each student) as I write them, without having returned ther work. What is worse is that they also get e-mails informing them about my comments!

It annoys me when this happens, I think Google should do something about it. By the way, I did some research and found that my students can't write essays themselves, so they order them from online writers. So, they type on Google "how to find high quality online essay writer" and get a lot of options for essay writing services. Actually, I think they can find anything on Google now. I am interested to know your opinion on this issue. On the one hand, I understand that this is wrong. On the other hand, I noticed that those students, who ordered works, improved their writing skills over time. Perhaps the essays they ordered served as an example for them and thus they were able to learn how to write an essay correctly. What do you think about it?

Happened to me too. I started grading assignments, wrote comments on the side of their google doc, and students got the comments right away. I have not returned their work. I accidentally started marking one that hadn't been submitted yet, and those comments were seen as well, so it didn't matter if it was a submitted assignment or not. Google, this is terrible. Teachers don't necessarily have the time to mark all the student work at once. We can't have our comments going out to students while we are marking, as those students are now trying to fix their work, and also can give answers to other students that haven't submitted yet.
