How can I create a chat for my students in Classroom?
0
I am looking to set up a chat for my students. I know that I can set up a video Meet within each class, but I am not looking for something different. This would be a supplement to my class, where students could ask me questions and get live help as long as I'm online, regardless of what class they are in. Is there a way to use Google Chat for this? Or something in Hangouts or Meet (which are confusingly referred to in the help files as both the same and different)? Basically this would be something I could post the link for, that only a link will allow access to, that I could keep up all day while students that needed help joined and left as needed as opposed to trying to make a set time only.

You can use private comments with individual students, or you can post on the Stream tab

Hello!

Welcome to the Google for Education forum!  If you are looking for a backchannel platform, I would recommend checking out these blog posts.   Today's meet was a great tool for backchanneling, but it has discontinued.  I hope you can find a tool in one of these blog posts.

However, you can setup "office hours" with your students and start a conversation with them using Google Meet.  This can be a small group of students.

I hope this helps.

I am wondering the same thing and these replies did not help.  A lot of educators want to type live with students, but for privacy and policy reasons, do NOT want to do video.  How do we set up a chat (typing), is what the first person is asking.  NOT Google Meet.

Thanks.

Iยดm also a teacher, and I think that it would be very helpful if there was an option to chat with my students in the Google Classroom in the real time, we don't need video chat, but just a window, where the can make written questions. It's a suggestion.

I am a teacher and we used google hangouts to chat (basically text message) with our students during remote learning for any questions.  It is not a part of Google classroom, but worked great for them to ask questions about their assignments and anything in google classroom.
