How do I exempt individual students from grading?

I would like to be able to enter an "X" or an "NA" or some such to exempt a student from grading. They should still be able to see the assignment, so I can't just uncheck their name. I don't want to put in a 0 bcs they were absent. Is there currently any way to do this?

Hi, Williams!

Currently, there is no way to exempt a student from a grade in an assignment while still allowing them to see the assignment.

You should submit this as a feature request though! The Google Classroom Team is always listening!

Here is a slightly cumbersome solution.

Create the assignment for students that you want to grade with the appropriate point value.  Do not include students that you aren't grading on that assignment.

Then, "create" another assignment with the "reuse post" feature and choose the same assignment that you previously created. This time choose just the students that you want to give access to the assignment but don't want to grade.  Set the assignment as "ungraded" in the points category and do not include a due date.  Not including a due date will make it so that the assignment doesn't show as missing after the due date would have passed.

Looking for this to be an added feature too! Following.

I want the ability to exempt a student when they needed to work on something, but may have a different scale or absent and it didn't need to be calculated for them.  I'd love an EXEMPT option!!

Hello,   I hope someone is working on an exempt option.   My students are not required to make up my lesson if they are absent or excused form my class for some reason.  Of course I don't know that until they don't come to class.  The students see the assignment as missing.

Please help!

Yes! This would be a tremendous help with regard to the organizational aspect of grade verification and reporting.

You can remove a student from the assignment, thus they are not responsible for the grade.  To do this, go to the INSTRUCTIONS for the assignment in question.  EDIT the assignment.  In the upper right where it indicates who it is assigned to, it automatically says ALL STUDENTS, but you can click a down arrow to show the whole class.  Then, you can remove 1, 2, or more of the students it is assigned to.
Hope that helps.

I did find out how to do this retroactively although it is tedious. You can go back to the original assignment and remove the students that won't need to complete the assignment.

The problem is the student has already seen the assignment and now it has disappeared. I've found feedback of this going back to over a year ago and then someone from the Google Team repeatedly saying that they are always listening. If they are always listening to suggestions, listen to the teachers... We would like an easy way to excuse a student in the grading section.
