You can block students from using classic Hangouts and Google Chat on their school-managed Chromebooks. You can block all students. Or, set different rules for students in certain groups.
Block classic Hangouts and Chat
Important: These steps work only on school-managed Chromebooks running Chrome OS.
Step 1: Block URLs-
Sign in to your Google Admin console.
Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

From the Admin console Home page, go to DevicesChrome.

Click User and browser settings.

To apply the setting to everyone, leave the top organisational unit selected. Otherwise, select a child organisational unit or a configuration group.

Under URL blocking, click URL denylist and enter these URLs:

https://hangouts.google.com
-
https://chat.google.com
-

Click URL denylist exceptions and enter https://hangouts.google.com/hangouts/_/meet.

Click Save If you configured an organisational unit or group, you might be able to inherit or override a parent organisational unit, or unset a group.
If your school uses Android apps on Chromebooks, we recommend only adding the apps that your school needs to your allowlist. You can also allow or block the installation of apps for all students or by group.
