New features

What’s changing for Back to School 2018?

New Classwork page—You can now organize your curriculum assignments into units or modules, and reorder work to match your class sequence. Learn more.

New grading tool—Save time grading and giving feedback with the new grading tool. The grading tool has a built-in comment bank where you can save commonly used feedback. You can also easily switch between student submissions when grading. Learn more.

Copy and reuse classwork—When you set up and reuse a class, you can now copy all topics and assignments from one class to another. All work is copied as drafts, so you can modify it before posting. Learn more.

Improved People and Settings pages—You can view and manage co-teachers, students, and guardians all on the People page. We introduced a Settings page for all class settings, so you have one convenient location to update class descriptions, display, or reset class codes, and manage and control how students post on the Stream page. Learn more.

Turn off notifications for a class—You can turn off all notifications for a given class. Learn more.

Materials on the Classwork page—You can add class resource materials on the Classwork page. This supports sharing and organizing resources like readings or reference materials. Learn more.

What other changes can I expect?

Soon we'll add the following feature:

Locked mode quizzes—You can use a locked mode to keep students focused when taking Google Forms quizzes on managed Chromebooks. And you'll be able to create Google Forms quizzes from Classroom, making the assignment process easier and faster. 

Can I use the Classwork page with an existing class?

Yes. You can add the Classwork page to an existing class. For more information, see Add or remove the Classwork page.

Can I opt out of using the Classwork page?

Yes. You can opt out of using the Classwork page. When you opt out, the following features change:

  • The Classwork page is removed.
  • Posts that were reordered go back to their original order.
  • Assignments and questions appear on the Stream page.
  • Materials posted to the Classwork page are removed.

 

Opt out of the Classwork page

Computer

  1. Open the class that has the Classwork page.
  2. In the bottom-left corner, click Help Help.
  3. Click Remove Classwork page.
  4. To confirm, click Remove Classwork.

Mobile

  1. Open the class that has the Classwork page and tap Classwork.
  2. In the top-right corner, tap More More.
  3. Tap Remove Classwork page.
  4. To confirm, tap Remove Classwork.

About page

Where is the About page?

We removed the About page and moved most of its information to other pages.

  • To view a class description, go to the Stream page.
  • To edit a class’s subject, description, room, and settings, go to the Settings page. Learn more.
  • To view, add, or remove co-teachers, go to the People page. The People page consolidates information about all the members of a class including teachers, students, and guardians. Learn more.
  • To view the class Google Calendar and Drive folder, go to the Classwork page. Learn more.
Where are the class materials I uploaded to the About page?

Class materials you uploaded to the About page are still in Google Drive, in the folder for that class. You can re-add the materials on the Classwork page. For more information, see Add materials to the Classwork page.

Why can’t I add class materials on the About page?

We removed the About page, but you can now add materials to the Classwork page. You can group materials into topics and reorder them, similar to other Classwork page items. For more information, see Add materials to the Classwork page.

Other pages

How have topics changed?

On the Classwork page, you can group and reorder assignments and questions by topic. For more information, see Organize the Classwork page.

On the Stream page, announcements no longer have topics and can’t be filtered by topic.

Where is the plus button on the Stream page?

We removed the plus button on the Stream page and added a text entry box at the top of the page.

  • To post an announcement, click Share something with your class and enter your text.
  • To reuse a post, in the Share something with your class box, click Reuse Post Reuse post.

What is the People page?

The People page is a new page that gathers information about teachers, students, and guardians on one page. Here, you can view, add, remove, and email anyone connected with the class. Students can view and email their teacher and classmates.

Can I opt out of using the People page?

No. All classes have the People page.

Can I opt out of using the Settings page?

No. All classes have the Settings page.

Feedback and feature requests

How can I submit feedback and feature requests?

If you have feedback you'd like to share with us, follow the steps below.

Computer

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. In the bottom-left corner, click Help Helpand then Send feedback.
  3. Enter your feedback.
  4. (Optional) If you want to include a screenshot with your feedback:
    • To include a full screenshot of your entire screen, ensure Include screenshot is checked.
    • To highlight or hide areas of your screenshot:
      1. Click Click to highlight or hide info.
      2. Highlight or hide areas of your screenshot, then click Done.
  5. Click Send.

Android

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. In the top-right corner, tap More Moreand then Send Google feedback.
  3. Enter your feedback.
  4. (Optional) If you want to include a screenshot with your feedback:
    • To include a screenshot and your system logs, ensure Include screenshot and logs is checked.
    • To highlight or hide areas of your screenshot:
      1. Tap Highlight and hide content.
      2. Highlight or hide areas of your screenshot, then click Done Done.
  5. Tap Send Send.

iPhone and iPad

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. In the top-left corner, tap Menu and then Send Google feedback.
  3. Enter your feedback.
  4. (Optional) If you want to include a screenshot with your feedback:
    • To include a full screenshot of your entire screen, ensure Screenshot is checked.
    • To highlight or hide areas of your screenshot:
      1. Tap Highlight or hide info.
