Tips for using Forms quizzes with Classroom

This page is for teachers. Students go here.

You can attach a Google Forms quiz to any assignment. Like any other assignment, you can post the quiz to one or more classes or students. And, you can reuse the quiz and assignment.

You must have a G Suite account to use Forms in Classroom. If you don't know your G Suite account, ask your administrator.

Customize a quiz

Choose a quiz confirmation message

When students submit a quiz in Forms, they get a confirmation message. You can tailor this message for any quiz. For example, you might want to give students a date that you’ll grade and return their answers. Here’s how:

  1. In Forms, open a quiz.
  2. Click Settings Settingsand thenPresentation.
  3. Under Confirmation message, enter your text and click Save.
Change the point value to suit your quiz

By default, the grade point value for a quiz is set to zero. If you use a particular point value for most of your quizzes, you can change the default.

  1. In Forms, open a quiz.
  2. In the top corner of the page, click More ""and thenPreferences.
  3. Next to Default quiz point value, enter a value and click Save.
  4. If you have a quiz open when you change the default point value, you have to update it manually to the new default value:

On the quiz form, click Answer key and enter the new default value.

Allow students to upload files in a quiz

You can allow students to upload files as a response to a quiz or attached to responses. If you create your form in a shared drive, students can’t upload files. For more, go to What are shared drives?

The files that students upload save to the form creator's Google Drive. Learn how to clear Google Drive space and increase storage. You can specify the file types you accept, and limit the:

  • file size
  • number of files
  • total GB of files

Import grades to Classroom

If you attach a quiz to an assignment, you can import grades from Forms to Classroom’s Student Work page. However, if you attach a form as a link in Classroom, you can't import student grades. For details, go to Create a quiz assignment.

When you import grades, all grades are imported. You can’t select some grades to import. If you don’t want to import all grades, you can enter them manually on the Classroom Student Work page. For details, go to Import grades.

Open all   |   Close all

Check your settings

To import grades:

  • The quiz must be the only attachment on the assignment.
  • Students are limited to 1 response.
  • Students must be in the same domain as you.
  • Student email addresses must be collected.

If you change any of these settings after you save or post the assignment, grade importing might be turned off and you might not be able to import grades.

Import quiz grades before grading other work

Importing quiz grades will override any current grades for the assignment. Import the quiz grades first. Then, grade any other work on the assignment.

Edit an assignment after you import grades

If you edit an assignment after you turn on grade importing and post an assignment, grade importing might get turned off. For example, if you add another attachment or change a setting that's needed to import grades, grade importing is turned off.

Change grades after importing

The grades in Forms and Classroom are separate. If you change the grades in Forms after you import them to Classroom, click Import grades to bring the new grades into Classroom and overwrite the previous grades you imported.

For details on how to track grade changes, go to See the grade and submission history.
