Transfer ownership of a class

If you leave a class, you can transfer class ownership to a co-teacher.

Who can you transfer ownership to?

  • If you have a G Suite for Education account—You can transfer class ownership only to a co-teacher in your domain. You can't transfer ownership to a teacher in a different domain, or to one with a personal Google Account. 
  • If you use Classroom with a personal Google Account—You can transfer ownership only to a co-teacher with another personal Google Account. You can't transfer class ownership to a teacher with a G Suite for Education account.

Who owns class materials after a transfer?

After you transfer class ownership, the new primary teacher is the owner of:

  • The class Google Drive folder
  • Materials in the class templates folder
  • Turned-in student work

Note: The new teacher can delete the class.

Who owns deleted materials?

If you have a G Suite for Education account, you still own any materials that were deleted before the ownership transfer. Learn more about making someone else the owner of your files.

Transfer class ownership

Transfer your class to a co-teacher

You can transfer class ownership only to a co-teacher. To learn how to add a co-teacher, go to Add a co-teacher to a class.

When the co-teacher accepts the transfer, they become the primary teacher and you become a co-teacher.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class you want to transfer to another teacher.
  3. At the top, click People.

    Click People

  4. Next to the teacher's name, click More More and then Make class owner.
  5. Click Invite.

    Note: You own the class until the co-teacher accepts the invitation. After you get a confirmation email about ownership transfer, you become the co-teacher. 

Cancel an invitation to transfer a class

You can revoke an invitation before the co-teacher accepts it.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class for which you want to revoke an invitation to transfer ownership.
  3. At the top, click People.

    Click People

  4. Next to the teacher's name, click More More and then Revoke invite to own.
Accept or decline ownership of a class

You get an email when a teacher invites you to take ownership of a class. You can also click Accept on the class card when you sign in to Classroom.

  1. In your email program, click the email and then Respond.
  2. Click Accept or Decline.

Note: If you accept, you and the original owner get confirmation emails when the transfer completes.
