Install the Share to Classroom Chrome extension

Teachers and students using Chrome browsers can share web pages with the Share to Classroom Chrome extension. Teachers can also use the extension to create assignments and announcements.

Who can install the extension?
  • Administrators of G Suite for Education accounts—Administrators can pre-install the extension for members of their organization. This saves time, reduces troubleshooting requests, and ensures teachers and students can get started right away with the extension.
  • Teachers—You can install the Share to Classroom Chrome extension.
  • Students—If teachers post installation instructions to students, they also can install the extension.
Installation instructions—administrators

Only G Suite for Education administrators can pre-install the extension for members of their organization.

  1. Sign in to your Google Admin console.

    Sign in using your administrator account (does not end in @gmail.com).

  2. From the dashboard, click Device management.Where is it?
  3. Click Chrome management and then User settings.
  4. Select the organizational unit you want to configure settings for.

    If you want to configure settings for everyone in the organizational unit, select the top-level unit. Or, select one of the child organizational units.

  5. At Apps and Extensions and next to Force installed Apps and Extensions, click Manage force-installed apps.
  6. Click Chrome Web Store and search for adokjfanaflbkibffcbhihgihpgijcei or Share to Classroom.
  7. Next to the extension, click Add and then Save.
Installation instructions—teachers
  1. Go to g.co/sharetoclassroom.
  2. Click Add to Chrome.
  3. Click Add extension.

    You’ll see the Share to Classroom icon to the right of the address bar in Chrome.

    Click Share to Classroom

  4. Click the Share to Classroom icon to open the extension.

    Note: You need to be signed in to Chrome to use the extension.

Post installation instructions to students

As a teacher, you can post the installation instructions to students.

  1. Click this link:

    Teachers: Post the installation instructions to Classroom

  2. Click Choose class and then select a class.
  3. To select the type of post, click Choose action.
  4. Click one option:
    • Create an assignment
    • Ask question
    • Make an announcement
  5. Click Go.

    The post opens with the instructions added as an attachment.

  6. Choose an option to post the instructions:
    • for an assignment, click Assign.
    • for a question, click Ask. 
    • for an announcement, click Post.
  7. Click View to see the post in the class stream.
Installation instructions—students

As a student, you can install the Share to Classroom extension if the teacher posted instructions in the class stream.

  1. Sign in to Classroom with your Google Account.

    For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class.
  3. On the post, click Share to Classroom - Chrome Web Store.
  4. Click Add to Chrome.
  5. Click Add extension.

    You’ll see the Share to Classroom icon to the right of the address bar in Chrome.

    Click Share to Classroom

  6. Click the Share to Classroom icon to open the extension.

    Note: You need to be signed in to Chrome to use the extension

Troubleshooting

Can't access the Chrome Web Store

If teachers or students can’t access the Chrome Web Store,  the G Suite for Education administrator can enable it. 

Enable the Chrome Web Store

  1. Sign in to the Google Admin console.
  2. Click Apps.
  3. Click Additional Google Services.
  4. Click Chrome Web Store.
  5. Next to Chrome Web Store, click More  and select On for everyone or On for some organizations.
  6. Complete the steps to turn on the Chrome Web Store for your organization.
Add the Share to Classroom extension to permitted apps

G Suite administrators who block all apps except those they specifically permitted must add the Share to Classroom Chrome extension to permitted apps to allow teachers and students to install it.

If teachers or students can't install the extension, ask your Classroom administrator to add the Share to Classroom extension to permitted apps.

"Added to Chrome" error message

The Chrome Web Store listing for the Share to Classroom extension says Added to Chrome, but you don’t see the icon next to the address bar,. To make the extension icon visible:

  1. Click Menu on the browser toolbar.
  2. Select More tools and then Extensions.
  3. Find Share to Classroom and check the Enabled box.
  4. If you see Show button under Share to Classroom, click Show button.
  5. If you still don’t see the extension with the Enabled box checked, click and drag the right end of the address bar to the left to reveal more extensions.
"Not signed in" or "Can't connect" error messages

If you receive an error that you're not signed in to Chrome or can't connect to Share to Classroom, click Feedback  Feedback to report the issue. Sign in again:

  1. Ensure that your computer is connected to the internet.
  2. Enter chrome://chrome-signin in your address bar, and sign in to your account again.
  3. Close and restart Google Chrome.
  4. Restart your computer.
