Turn notifications on or off

This article is for teachers and students. Guardians, go to About guardian email summaries. 

You can set up Classroom to get notifications, like due-date reminders or invitations to join a class.

By default, you get email notifications for various activities, such as when someone comments on your post or your teacher returns work. You can change these notification settings at any time.

Students and teachers can:

  • Turn all notifications on or off.
  • Choose which notifications you get.
  • Turn notifications for a class on or off.

Turn on or off email notifications

You can turn off all Classroom notifications.
  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. At the top, tap Menu Menu.

  3. Scroll down and tap Settings.

  4. Tap Notifications.

  5. Next to Email notifications, choose one:

    • To turn off notifications, tap the switch to Off Off.

    • To turn on notifications, tap the switch to On On.

Turn on or off device notifications

You can turn off all Classroom notifications.
  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. At the top, tap Menu Menu.

  3. Scroll down and tap Settings.

  4. Tap Notifications.

  5. Next to Email notifications, tap Enabled or Disabled.

  6. Tap Notifications and choose one:

    • To turn off notifications, next to Allow Notifications, tap the switch to Off Off.

    • To turn on notifications, next to Allow Notifications, tap the switch to On On.

Customize device notifications

You can choose which notifications you receive for all of your classes. For example, you can turn off invitation notifications for all classes but keep assignment notifications on.

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.

  2. At the top, tap Menu Menu.

  3. Scroll down and tap Settings.

  4. Ensure that Device notifications is set to Enabled.

  5. Under Device notifications, turn any notification on or off.

Teacher notifications

To know when... Turn on:
Someone comments on your post Comments on your posts
Someone mentions you in a post or comment Comments that mention you
A student sends you a private comment Private comments on work
A student submits work after the due date Late submissions of student work
A student resubmits work Resubmissions of student work
A teacher invites you to teach a course as a co-teacher Invitations to co-teach classes

Student notifications

To know when... Turn on:
Someone comments on your post Comments on your posts
Someone mentions you in a post or comment Comments that mention you
A teacher sends you a private comment Private comments on work
A teacher creates an assignment, question, or announcement Work and other posts from teachers
A teacher grades or returns work Returned work and grades from your teachers
A teacher invites you to a new class Invitations to join classes as a student
You have unsubmitted work that's due within 24 hours Due-date reminders for your work
Turn off notifications for a class

You can choose whether you receive notifications for a specific class. For example, if you don’t want notifications for your Math class, you can turn them off, but you’ll still get notifications for your other classes.

Note: If you turn off notifications for a class, all notifications for that class are turned off.

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom
  2. At the top, tap Menu Menu.
    Tap Menu
  3. Scroll down and tap Settings and then Class notifications.
  4. Next to the class name, tap the switch to Off Off or On On.
Read notifications

If you have any unread notifications, you’ll see a red circle on the app Menu Menu.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen.
  2. To dismiss a notification, next to the notification, tap Remove Remove.
