Manage notifications

This article is for teachers and students. Guardians, go to About guardian email summaries. 

By default, you get email notifications for some activities, such as when someone comments on your post or your teacher returns work. Students and teachers can change their notification settings at any time. If you use Classroom on a mobile device, you need to update the settings on your device as well.

Turn email notifications on or off

You can decide if you want to get email notifications about updates to your classes.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Optional: To expand the navigation drawer, at the top left, click Menu .
  3. Scroll down and click Settings .
  4. Next to Allow email notifications, click the switch Off or On .

Important: This control affects most, but not all notifications. Examples of notifications you’ll still receive:

  • Course changes, such as ownership transfer and copying a course
  • Drive quota exceeded errors
  • Abuse alerts for customer accounts
  • Any notifications related to guardians

Tip: To minimize the menu to a collapsed version, at the top left, click Menu .

Customize notifications

You can choose the notifications that you get for all of your classes. For example, you can turn off invitation notifications for all classes but keep notifications for assignments on.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Optional: To expand the navigation drawer, at the top left, click Menu .
  3. Scroll down and click Settings .
  4. Next to Allow email notifications, click the switch On .
  5. Next to each type of notification that you want to get, click the switch On .
    Refer to the tables below for a description of each notification.

Teacher notifications

Notification Description
Comments on your posts Someone comments on your post.
Comments that mention you Someone mentions you in a post or comment.
Private comments on work A student sends you a private comment.
Late submissions of student work A student submits work after the due date.
Resubmissions of student work A student resubmits work.
Invitations to co-teach classes A teacher invites you to teach a course as a co-teacher.
Scheduled post published or failed A scheduled post published or failed to post.
 

Student notifications

Notification Description
Comments on your posts Someone comments on your post.
Comments that mention you Someone mentions you in a post or comment.
Private comments on work A teacher sends you a private comment.
Work and other posts from teachers A teacher creates an assignment, question, or announcement.
Returned work and grades from your teachers A teacher grades or returns work.
Invitations to join classes as a student A teacher invites you to a new class.
Due-date reminders for your work You have unsubmitted work that's due within 24 hours.
Turn all notifications on or off for a class

You can choose whether you receive notifications for a specific class. For example, if you don’t want any notifications for your Math class, you can turn them off, but you’ll still get notifications for your other classes.

Note: If you turn off notifications for a class, all notifications for that class are turned off.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Optional: To expand the navigation drawer, at the top left, click Menu .
  3. Scroll down and click Settings .
  4. Next to Allow email notifications, click the switch On .
  5. Next to Class notifications, click the Down arrow .
  6. Next to the class name, click the switch On or Off .

Tip: To minimize the menu to a collapsed version, at the top left, click Menu .

You can read your notifications in your email program.
