Manage class settings

Note: The previous version of Classroom (without the Classwork page) was deprecated and discontinued on September 4, 2019. For more information, see Classroom classes without the Classwork page.


After you create a class, you can control Classroom settings. 

You can:

  • Edit the class title, description, section, room, or subject.
  • Display, change, or disable the class code.
  • Choose how Classwork notifications appear on the Stream page.
  • Decide if your students can post on the Stream page.
  • Turn on guardian email summaries.
  • Choose to see deleted posts.

Choose your class settings

Add class information
  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. Tap the class and then Settings Settings.

    Click Settings

    The class name is automatically entered.

  3. (Optional) To enter a new name, class description, section, room, or subject, tap Edit Edit and make your changes.

    Note: You cannot leave the class name blank. If you leave any other field blank, it won't appear in the student view of the page.

  4. Tap Save.
  5. To exit Settings, tap Done.
Copy, disable, or reset the class code
  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. Tap the class and then Settings Settings.

    Click Settings

  3. At Class code, tap More More and then Disable class code or Reset class code.
  4. (Optional) To enable a disabled code, tap More More and then Enable class code.
  5. (Optional) To copy the class code, tap Class code.
  6. To exit Settings, tap Done

Choose how Classwork notifications appear on the Stream page

You can choose an expanded or collapsed view for Classwork notifications on the Stream page. You can also hide them entirely from the Stream page. For example: 
  • Show attachments and details (Expanded view)

  • Show condensed notifications (Collapsed view).

  • Hide notifications (No Classwork notifications appear on the Stream page).

To choose how your Classwork notifications appear on the Stream page:

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. Tap the class and then Settings Settings.
    Click Settings
  3. Under General, tap Classwork on the stream, and then select an option:
    Classwork on the stream menu options: Expand, collapse, or hide notifications

Note: Only teachers see the turned in, assigned, and graded counts that show for an assignment.

Set up guardian summaries

Note: This setting won't be visible unless your G Suite administrator allows guardian emails.

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. Tap the class and then Settings Settings.

    Click Settings

  3. At Class guardian summaries, tap Turn on Turn on.

  4. Tap Add class.
  5. To exit Settings, tap Done.
Control who posts to the Stream page

Students can post messages on the Stream page and comment on posts from you and from classmates.

You can control students’ posts on the Stream page by setting permissions for individual students or the whole class. You can delete student posts. You can also see any comments and posts that a student made and then deleted.

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. Tap the class and then Settings Settings.

    Click Settings

  3. Tap Students can post and comment and tap a permission to select it:
    • Students can post and comment—This is the default. Students can create a post on the Stream page and comment on any item.
    • Students can only comment—Students can comment on an existing post, but not create a post.
    • Only teachers can post or comment—Students can't comment on or create posts on the Stream page. This is the same as muting all students.

  4. To exit Settings, tap Done.

This feature is not available in the Android version of Classroom. Click Computer to see the instructions.
