Grade and return an assignment

Classroom supports a variety of assessment methods. You can give a numeric grade, leave comment-only feedback, or use a combination of both.

On the Student work page, you can see the current status of students’ work and enter a numeric grade after you’ve reviewed an assignment. If you make a copy of a Google Drive file for each student, you can review work in progress and add comments.

Using the Classroom grading tool, you can give comment-only feedback, enter a grade, or do both on an assignment once it’s turned in. For instructions on using the  grading tool, see Give feedback on assignments.

If you don't have the Classwork page, go here instead.

View student assignments
  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class.
  3. At the top, click Classwork and then the assignment and then View AssignmentDon't see Classwork?
  4. On the Student Work page, you can review the following details:
    • Turned in—The number and names of students who submitted work.
    • Assigned—The number and names of students who haven't submitted work.
      If a student unsubmits work, the work is marked as Assigned.
    • Graded—If your assignment is graded, the number and names of students you've graded and returned work to.
    • Returned—If your assignment is ungraded, the number and names of students you've returned work to.
      (Optional) Click Turned in, Assigned, Graded, or Returned to see the students for that category.
  5. To see their submission, on the left, click a student’s name.
Enter a grade on the Student Work page
  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class.

  3. At the top, click Classwork and then the assignment and then View AssignmentDon't see Classwork?

  4. To open and review any file the student attached, click the thumbnail.

  5. (Optional) The default point value is 100. To change it, click the point value. Enter another value or select Ungraded and then Update.

    Note: For decimal grades, Classroom supports 2 digits after the decimal point. If you enter more than 2 digits, the grade is rounded to the nearest 2-digit decimal form. For example, if you enter 88.725, it’s rounded to 88.73.

  6. Next to the student's name, enter the grade. The grade is automatically saved.

  7. Enter grades for any additional students.

To update students about their grades, you need to return the assignment to them. You can return assignments during another session.

Enter a grade in the grading tool

You can enter grades and give your students personalized feedback with the Classroom grading tool. For instructions on using the grading tool, see Give feedback on assignments.

The default grade denominator is 100, but it can be changed to any whole number greater than zero. You can change the grade denominator at any time. Changes to grade denominators only affect assignments that haven’t been returned. Returned assignments maintain their original denominator.

  1. Open a student assignment in the grading tool.
  2. Under Grade, enter the grade.
    Click Grade
Note: Assignments can be returned to students without a grade.
Import grades from a Google Forms quiz

To enable grade importing, ensure that a Forms quiz is the only attachment on an assignment. 

If you didn’t enable grade importing when you created the assignment, you can edit the assignment after the assignment is posted and completed by students. For details, see Tips for using Forms quizzes.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class.

  3. At the top, click Classwork and then the assignment and then View AssignmentDon't see Classwork?

  4. At the top-right, click Import Grades.
  5. Click Import to confirm. 
    The grades autofill next to the students’ names.
    Note: Importing grades overwrites any grades already entered.
  6. Check the box next to each student whose assignment you want to return and click Return
    Students can see their grade in Classroom and Forms.

Return an assignment from the Student work page
  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class.
  3. At the top, click Classwork and then the assignment and then View AssignmentDon't see Classwork?
  4. Check the box next to each student whose assignment you want to return and click Return.
    Click Return
  5. To confirm, click Return again.

When you return an assignment, students get an email or mobile notification if they have notifications set up.

Note: Assignments can be returned to students without a grade. 

Return an assignment from the grading tool
  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class.
  3. At the top, click Classwork and then the assignment and then View AssignmentDon't see Classwork?
  4. Open a student assignment.
  5. In the top-right corner, click Return.

After you finish grading, the grading tool syncs your feedback and grades to Classroom.

Return ungraded assignments
If you don’t use the grading tool in Classroom, or if an assignment doesn’t need a grade, you can set the assignment to Ungraded.

When students complete a task, they click Turn in or Mark as done in the assignment. See Submit an assignment.

Note: If a student doesn’t click Turn in or Mark as done before the due date, the assignment is marked “Missing.” If there’s no due date, it’s marked “Assigned.”

You can then review their work and return it.
 

Return an ungraded assignment

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class.
  3. At the top, click Classwork and then the assignment and then View AssignmentDon't see Classwork?
  4. On the left, check the box next to each student whose assignment you want to return and click Return
    Click Return
  5. To confirm, click Return again.
Change a grade

You can change a grade after you return an assignment to students. Also, students can do more work and resubmit the assignment. You can then change the grade and return the assignment again.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class.
  3. At the top, click Classwork and then the assignment and then View AssignmentDon't see Classwork?
  4. Click the grade you want to change.
  5. Enter a new number.
    The new grade is automatically saved.
  6. (Optional) Click Return and then Return to confirm.

Note: To update students about new grades, you need to return the assignment again.

See the grade and submission history of an assignment

You can see how the grade for an assignment has changed and how many times a student has submitted an assignment.

Important: This feature is only available on turned in and graded assignments.

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. At the top, click Classwork and then the assignment and then View AssignmentDon't see Classwork?
  3. On the left, click a student's name.
  4.  Click See history.

Export grades 

You can export grades from Classroom to Google Sheets or to a comma-separated values (CSV) file to see grades for all students in the class at once.

Currently, you can only export grades in the computer version of Classroom.

Export grades to Sheets

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class.
  3. At the top, click Classwork and then the assignment and then View AssignmentDon't see Classwork?
  4. On the Student Work page, click Settings Settings and then Copy all grades to Google Sheets.

    The spreadsheet is created in your Classroom Drive folder.
    Download grades

Export grades to a CSV file

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class.
  3. At the top, click Classwork and then the assignment and then View AssignmentDon't see Classwork?
  4. On the Student Work page, click Settings Settings and choose an option:
    • To download grades for a single assignment, select Download these grades as CSV.
    • To download all class assignment and question grades, select Download all grades as CSV.

      The file is saved to your computer.

My class doesn't have the Classwork page

View student assignments
  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class and then the assignment.
  3. On the Student Work page, you can review the status of student assignments:
    • Turned in—Submitted work you haven’t yet graded or returned.
    • Assigned—Missing or unsubmitted work.
    • Graded—Graded work you’ve returned.
    • Returned—Ungraded (non-graded) work you’ve returned.
    • (Optional) Click Turned in, Assigned, Graded, or Returned to see the students for that category.

    Note: If a student unsubmits work, the work is marked as Assigned.

  4. Click a student’s name to view their submission.
  5. (Optional) To add a private comment, on the left, click the student's name and then Add private comment. Enter your comment and click Post.
  6. (Optional) To add a comment to the class, click Instructions and then Add class comment. Enter your comment and click Post.
Grade and return an assignment

You can edit or comment in any document in Drive. Your edits or comments are automatically saved and ready for the student to review when they open the document.

Students can’t edit any files attached to an assignment that’s turned in until it's returned.

Grade an assignment

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class and then the assignment.
  3. To open and review any file the student attached, click the thumbnail.
  4. (Optional) The default point value is 100. To change it, click the point value. Enter another value or select Ungraded and then Update.
  5. Next to the student's name, click Add grade and enter the grade.

Note: Grades are automatically saved. To update students about their grades, you need to return the assignment to them. You can return assignments during another session. However, private comments entered during grading won't be saved unless you return the assignment immediately.

Grade and return a Google Forms quiz

  1. If the assignment has a Google Forms quiz, and grade importing was enabled when you created the assignment, click Import grades.
  2. Click Import to confirm.

    Note: Importing grades will overwrite any grades already entered.

    You’ll see the grades autofill at the students’ names.

  3. To return the grades to students, click Return.

    Students can also view their grades in Forms.

Note: If you didn’t enable grade importing when you created the assignment, you can edit the assignment to enable it after the assignment is posted and completed by students. For details, see Edit an assignment.

Return an assignment

  1. Go to classroom.google.com and click Sign In.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class and then the assignment.
  3. Check the box next to each student whose assignment you want to return and click Return.
  4. (Optional) To add a private comment, on the left, click the student's name and then Add private comment. Enter your comment and click Post.
  5. To confirm, click Return again.

Note: When you return an assignment, students get an email or mobile notification if they have notifications set up.

Return ungraded assignments
If you don’t use the grading tool in Classroom, or if an assignment doesn’t need a grade, you can set the assignment to Ungraded.
Points

Change a grade

You can change a grade after you return an assignment to students. Also, students can do more work and resubmit the assignment. You can then change the grade and return the assignment again.

    Sign in with your Google Account. For example, you@yourschool.edu or you@gmail.comLearn more.

  2. Click the class and then the assignment.
  3. Click the grade you want to change.
  4. Enter a new number.
  5. (Optional) To add a private comment, on the left, click the student's name and then Add private comment.
  6. Enter your comment and then click Post.

Note: The new grade is automatically saved. To update students about new grades, you need to return the assignment again.

See the grade and submission history of an assignment

You can see how the grade for an assignment has changed and how many times a student has submitted an assignment.

Important: This feature is only available for turned in and graded assignments.

  3. Click the student's name and then See history.
Export grades

You can export grades from Classroom to Google Sheets or to a comma-separated values (CSV) file to see grades for all students in the class at once.
