Post announcements to your students

This article is for teachers. Students go here.

You can post announcements to your class on the class stream. Announcements are posts with no assignments. You can use them to give notices or reminders to your students. Announcements appear in chronological order. If you want, you can move an older post to the top. 

You can draft and schedule announcements and control who comments or replies to posts. If a student turns on notifications, they’ll get an email when you post an announcement.

Create an announcement

You can post announcements to one or more classes or to specific students in a class. You can also add attachments.

  1. Tap Classroom .
  2. Tap the class.
  3. Tap Share with your class and enter your announcement.

You can continue to edit and customize your announcement. Otherwise, if you’re ready, see below to post, schedule, or save your announcement.

Post to additional classes

Announcements to multiple classes are shared with all students in those classes.

  1. On the Stream page, tap Announce something to your class.
  2. Next to the class name, tap Next .
  3. Tap any additional classesand thenDone.

Post to individual students

Unless you’re posting to multiple classes, you can post an announcement to individual students. You can’t post to more than 100 students at a time.

  1. On the Stream page, tap Share with your class.
  2. Tap All studentsand thenAll students again to deselect it.
  3. Tap each student’s name to select them.
  4. Tap Done.

Add attachments

You can add attachments, such as Google Drive files, YouTube videos, or links, to your announcement. Google Drive items are view-only to students and editable by co-teachers. To change these sharing options, see Stop, limit, or change sharing.

  1. Follow the steps above to create a post.
  2. Tap Attach Attachand thenchoose an option:
    Attachment type Directions
     Drive
    1. Tap Drive .
    2. Tap the item.
    Link
    1. Tap Link .
    2. Enter the URLand thentap Add.
     Pick photo
    1. Tap Pick photo .
    2. Tap the photo.
    Use camera
    1. Tap Use camera .
    2. Take your photoand thentap Use photo.
    • Tip: When images and gifs are attached, a large version of the first one attached appears on your post as a display image.
    • To edit a display image:
    1. Attach the images.
    2. On the right of the image thumbnail, tap the Menu and then  Set as display image .
    • To remove a display image:
    1. Select the Menu and then Remove as display image Remove as display image.
    2. Tap Save.
  3. If you see a message that you don’t have permission to attach a file, tap Copy. Classroom makes a copy of the file to attach to the announcement and saves the copy to the class Drive folder.
  4. (Optional) To delete an attachment, next to the attachment, tap Remove .
Post, schedule, or save a draft announcement

You can post an announcement immediately, or you can schedule it to post later. If you don’t know when you want to post it, you can save it as a draft. Your drafts are kept in the Saved announcements section at the top of the Stream page.

Post an announcement

  1. Follow the steps above to create an announcement.
  2. Tap Post  to immediately post the announcement.

    Note: If you don’t enter text in the announcement, the Post link is not active even if you add attachments.

Schedule an announcement to post later

Note: You can only schedule announcements for one class at a time. To schedule the announcement for another class, schedule it first for one class and reuse the announcement in the other class.

  1. Follow the steps above to create an announcement.
  2. Tap More and thenSchedule.
  3. At Schedule for date, tap the date, select a date, and tap OK.
  4. At Schedule for time, tap the time, select a time, and tap OK.
  5. Tap Schedule.

    The announcement will be automatically posted on the scheduled date and time.

Save an announcement as a draft

  1. Follow the steps above to create an announcement.
  2. Tap More and thenSave changes.
Add a class comment to a posted announcement
  1. Tap Classroom .
  2. Tap the class.
  3. On the Stream page, find the announcement and tap Add class comment.
  4. Enter a comment and tap Post .

Manage announcements

Edit an announcement

Edits affect individual classes. For multi-class announcements, make edits in each class. 

Edit a posted announcement

  1. On the Stream page, next to the announcement, tap More and thenEdit.
  2. Enter your changes and tap Save.

Edit a scheduled announcement

  1. On the Stream page, tap Saved announcements.
  2. Tap the announcement.
  3. Enter your changes and tap Schedule.

Edit a draft announcement

  1. On the Stream page, tap Saved announcements.
  2. Tap the announcement and enter your changes.
  3. Tap  More and thenSave draft.
Reuse an announcement

To reuse an announcement, see Reuse a post.

Delete an announcement

Delete a posted announcement 

  1. Tap Classroom and thenthe class.
  2. On the Stream page, next to the announcement, tap More and thenDelete.
  3. Tap Delete again to confirm.

Delete a scheduled or draft announcement

  1. Tap Classroom and thenthe class.
  2. At the top of the Stream page, tap Saved announcementsand thenthe announcement.
  3. Tap  More and thenDelete draft.
Move an announcement to the top
You can move an announcement or any other post to the top of the stream.
  1. Tap Classroom .
  2. Tap the class.
  3. On the Stream page, on the announcement, tap More and thenMove to top.

Format announcements

Bold, italicize, and underline text.

  1. Tap Classroom and then the class.
  2. On the “Stream” page, tap Announce something with your class, and enter your announcement.
  3. Select the text that you want to bold, italicize, or underline.
  4. In the menu, tap Bold , Italic , or Underline .
  5. Tap Post .

Create a bulleted list 

  1. Tap Classroom and then the class.
  2. On the “Stream” page, tap Announce something with your class. 
  3. Enter a dash before the text for a list item. For example: Enter “- Text for a list item.”
    Important: Bullets look like a dash until you post the announcement.
  4. Tap Post .
