Post announcements to your students

You can post announcements to your class on the Stream page. Announcements are posts with no assignments. Use them to give notices to your students. Announcements appear on the Stream page in chronological order. If you want, you can move an older post to the top. 

Students get an email for each announcement, but they can turn off the email notification feature.

You can draft and schedule announcements, and control who comments or replies to posts. For details on commenting, see Set class permissions.

Create an announcement

You can post announcements to one or more classes, or to select students in a class. You can also add attachments.

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. Tap the class.
  3. Tap Share with your class and enter your announcement.

Post to additional classes

Announcements to multiple classes are shared with all students in those classes.

  1. Next to the class name, tap Next Next.
  2. Select any additional classes and tap Done

Post to individual students

Unless you’re posting to multiple classes, you can post an announcement to individual students. You can’t post to more than 100 students at a time.

  1. Tap All students and then All students again to deselect it.
  2. Tap each student’s name to select them.
  3. Tap Done.

    On the Stream page, you can see the number of students the announcement was posted to.

  4. (Optional) To view the students’ names, tap number students on the announcement.

Add attachments

You can add attachments, such as Google Drive files, YouTube videos, or links, to your announcement. Google Drive items are view-only to students and editable by co-teachers. To change these sharing options, see Stop, limit, or change sharing.

Note: If you see a message that you don’t have permission to attach a file, tap Copy. Classroom makes a copy to attach to the announcement and saves it to the class Drive folder.

  1. Tap Attach Attach and then Drive.
  2. Tap the item.

  1. Tap Attach Attach and then Link.
  2. Enter the URL and tap Add.
Pick photo Pick photo
  1. Tap Attach Attach and then Pick photo.
  2. Tap the file.
Take photo Use camera
  1. Tap Attach Attach and then Use camera.
  2. Take your photo.
  3. Tap Use photo.

To delete an attachment, next to the attachments, tap Remove Remove.

Post, schedule, or save a draft announcement

Note: If you see a message that you don’t have permission to attach a file, tap Copy. Classroom makes a copy to attach to the announcement and saves it to the class Drive folder.

To post the announcement immediately, tap Post Post.

To schedule the announcement for later:

  1. Tap More More and then Schedule.
  2. At Schedule for date, tap the date. Select a date and tap OK.
  3. At Schedule for time, tap the time. Select a time and tap OK.
  4. Tap Schedule.
    The announcement will automatically post on the scheduled date and time.
  5. (Optional) To schedule the announcement for another class, schedule it first for one class and reuse the announcement in the other class.

To save the announcement as a draft, tap More More and then Save changes.

To see your scheduled and draft posts, at the top of the Stream page, tap Saved posts.

Add a comment to a posted announcement

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. Tap the class.
  3. On the Stream page, find the announcement and tap Add class comment.
  4. Enter a comment and tap Post Post.
Edit an announcement

Edits affect individual classes. For multi-class announcements, make edits in each class. 

  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. Tap the class.
  3. Choose an option:
    • For a posted announcement:
      1. Next to the announcement, tap More More and then Edit.
      2. Make any changes and tap Save.
    • For a draft or scheduled announcement:
      1. At the top of the Stream page, tap Saved posts.
      2. Tap the announcement.
      3. Make any changes and post, save the changes, or schedule the announcement.
Reuse an announcement

To reuse an announcement, see Reuse a post.

Delete an announcement
  1. Tap Classroom Classroom and then the class.
  2. Choose an option:
    • For a posted announcement:
      1. On the Stream page, next to the announcement, tap More More and then Delete.
      2. Tap Delete again to confirm.
    • For a scheduled or draft announcement:
      1. At the top of the Stream page, tap Saved posts.
      2. Tap the announcement.
      3. Tap More More and then Delete draft.

Move an announcement to the top

You can move an announcement or any other post to the top of the stream.
  1. Tap Classroom Classroom.
  2. Tap the class.
  3. On the Stream page, on the announcement, tap More More and thenMove to top.
