Create, edit, delete, or share a practice set

Use practice sets with:

  • Google Workspace for Education Plus edition, formerly G Suite Enterprise for Education
  • Teaching and Learning Upgrade edition

Teachers can use practice sets to create, edit, or delete interactive assignments. Learn more about practice sets.

Create a practice set on the Classroom page

  1. On your computer, go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Optional: To expand the navigation drawer, at the top left, click Menu .
  3. On the left, click Resources .
  4. Click New practice set .
  5. Add questions to your practice set.
  6. Click Done editing.

Assign an existing practice set in an assignment

  1. On your computer, go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Click a class.
  3. At the top left, click the Classwork and then Create .
  4. In the list that drops down, click Assignment.
  5. Beneath "Attach," click Practice sets .
  6. Optional: To search for a practice set by title, click the Search box.
  7. Click an existing practice set.
  8. Click Attach.
  9. To create your assignment, follow the prompts.

Create a practice set in an assignment

  1. On your computer, go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Click a class.
  3. At the top, click the Classwork and then Create .
  4. In the list that drops down, click Assignment.
  5. Beneath "Attach," click Practice sets and then Create .

Edit a practice set

Important:

  • If a practice set is assigned, you can't edit it. To add an updated practice set, delete the assignment and attach the new practice set.
  • When you make a new practice set it will be in your account's new language. Existing practice sets will not fully update to your accounts new language.
  1. On your computer, go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Optional: To expand the navigation drawer, at the top left, click Menu .
  3. On the left, click Resources .
  4. Select a practice set you want to edit.
  5. To edit a practice set, at the top right, click Edit .
  6. Update the resource details.
  7. Click Done editing.

Tip: To collapse the menu, at the top left, click Menu .

Create, edit, or delete questions in a practice set

Add a question
  1. On your computer, go to a practice set.
  2. At the top right, click Edit.
  3. In the list that drops down, select a question type:
    • Short answer
    • Paragraph
    • Single-select list
    • Multi-select list
  4. Enter your question and its correct answer.
    • Short answer, single select, and multi-select question types in practice sets may suggest an answer. To use the suggested answer, click to select it. That answer becomes an answer option to your question.
  5. Optional: to create a new question, click New Question.

Tip: Questions set to “Auto,” are automatically graded. After the student turns in the practice set, you can manually grade it.

Upload images to a practice set
  1. On your computer, go to a practice set.
  2. At the top right, click Edit .
  3. Click the question or answer text box where you want to upload an image.
  4. On the right, click Insert an image   and then Upload image or Insert image from Drive .
  5. Optional:
    • To resize an image: Select the image you want to modify, then click Resize or click and drag the blue corners of the image.
    • To crop an image: Select the image you want to modify, then click Crop .
    • To delete an image: Select the image you want to modify, then click Delete .
    • To add alt text: Select the image you want to add alt text to, then click Add alt text
    • To upload a standalone image: Click Insert content and then Upload image or Insert image from Drive .

Tip: You can upload an image size of up to 20 MB.

Use math-specific characters in a question
  1. On your computer, go to a practice set.
  2. At the top right, click Edit.
  3. Write your question in the text box
  4. To use the math-specific keyboard, click Insert math formula .
  5. Click on the keyboard icon.
Tip: Students can use this keyboard only if you use it to create the question.
Add or remove a skill
When a skill is selected for a question, practice sets suggest learning resources for the students.
  1. On your computer, go to a practice set.
  2. At the top right, click Edit.
  3. At the bottom, in the question field, click See suggested.
  4. Enter keywords.
  5. In the list that drops down, select the skill that most closely applies to the question.
    • On the next line, resources automatically populate.
Add, edit, reorder, or delete problem resources
  1. On your computer, go to a practice set.
  2. At the top right, click Edit.
  3. Next to “Resources,” click Expand more .
  4. Select an option:
    • Add a resource:
      1. Click Add resource .
      2. Select an option:
        • Text hint
        • YouTube video
      3. Enter your text hint or select a YouTube video.
      4. At the bottom, your resource displays.
    • Edit a text hint:
      1. In a resource card, at the bottom right, click Edit .
      2. Enter your changes.
      3. Click Save.
    • Reorder your resources: Drag resource cards into a new order.
    • Delete a resource: In a resource card, at the top right, click Remove Remove.

Tip: To add a YouTube resource, your administrator must turn on YouTube for your Workspace account. Learn about access settings for your Google Workspace for Education account.

Add, edit, reorder, or delete Extra Help
  1. On your computer, go to a practice set.
  2. At the top right, click Edit.
  3. To the right of the question, click Extra Help and then Add Resource.
  4. Select an option:
    • Text hint: Add a text hint.
    • YouTube video: Add a video resource.
  5. To remove a resource: In a resource card, at the top right, click Remove Remove.

Delete a question
  1. On your computer, go to a practice set.
  2. At the top right, click Edit.
  3. At the bottom right, in the question, click More and then Delete.
Duplicate a question
  1. On your computer, go to a practice set.
  2. At the top right, click Edit.
  3. At the bottom right, in the question, click More and then Duplicate.
Reorder a question
  1. On your computer, go to a practice set.
  2. At the top right, click Edit.
  3. At the top center, in the question, click and hold Drag .
  4. Move the question to the desired location.
Import questions from a PDF
You can use a question from an existing pdf file in a new practice set.
  1. On your computer, go to a practice set.
  2. On the right, next to a question, click Insert content  and then Import .
  3. In the "Select a file" pane, select an option:
    • My Drive: Import a file from your Drive.
    • Upload: Upload a file from your computer.
  4. Select each problem you want to import.
  5. At the top right, click Import questions.
Import questions from Google Forms

  1. On your computer, go to a practice set.
  2. At the top right, click Edit.
  3. On the right, next to a question, click Insert content and then Import .
  4. Select a form that you want to import into your practice set.
  5. Click Import.
    • Problems from the form import into the practice set.
    • A dialog displays how many problems are imported.

Tip: Certain types of Google Forms questions aren’t compatible with practice sets. You might get a message that shows how many questions weren’t imported, with an option to view these details:

  • Questions with attached files
  • Linear scale
  • Checkbox grid
  • Multiple choice grid
  • Date
  • Time
  • Question groups
  • Images

Change auto-grade settings

You can set the auto-grade tool to recognize equivalent answers and ignore capitalization.

  1. On your computer, open a practice set.
  2. At the top, click Settings .
  3. Select options:
    • Allow equivalent answers: Mathematical answers with equivalent values and expressions are graded as correct. For example: 1.4, 7/5, x+y, and y+x.
    • Ignore capitalization: Answers with any capitalization are graded as correct. For example: Thursday, thursday, and tHursday.

Preview a practice set

To verify format, hints, and navigation, you can preview a practice set as your students will view it.

  1. On your computer, open a practice set.
  2. At the top, click Try as student.
    • The student view opens in a new window.

Tip: For a better preview of the auto-grade feature, add all correct answers before you preview a practice set as a student.

Delete or duplicate a practice set

  1. On your computer, go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Optional: To expand the navigation drawer, at the top left, click Menu .
  3. On the left, click Resources .
  4. At the bottom right of a resource you want to delete, click More .
  5. To:
    • Duplicate a practice set: Click Make a copy Copy invitation link.
    • Delete a practice set: Click Delete and then Delete.

Tip: To collapse the menu, at the top left, click Menu .

Share a practice set

Verified teachers can share practice sets with each other in their Google Workspace domain. They can copy and use each other's practice sets with their students. Learn how to verify teachers and set permissions.

  1. On your computer, go to classroom.google.com.
  2. Optional: To expand the navigation drawer, at the top left, click Menu .
  3. On the left, click Resources .
  4. At the bottom right of a practice set you want to share, click More and then Share link .
  5. Turn on Allow teachers to access via link .
  6. Click Copy link .
  7. Send the link to another verified teacher.

To edit or assign a shared practice set sent to you:

  1. Open the practice set with the shared link.
  2. At the top right of the practice set, click Make a copy Copy invitation link.
    • Copies save in "My practice sets."

Tips:

  • When link sharing is off, you can't preview or make a copy of a practice set.
  • If you have a practice set open when share permissions change, you can preview but not copy the practice set. When you refresh, the practice set is unavailable.
  • If you share a practice set with an account in a different language, the practice set stays in your language.
