Give feedback on assignments

While reviewing assignments, you can give feedback with in-line suggestions and margin comments.

If you enter the same comment for many students, you can save time by adding it to the comment bank for later use. You can also paste a prepared list of comments into the bank. The comment bank is tied to your Google Account, so you can use stored comments from any device.

Add comments to an assignment

    • If you're using Assignments outside your LMS, click the assignment and then the student's document.
    • If you're using Assignments LTI within your LMS, click the assignment and then Open in Assignments and then the student's document.

You have 2 ways to add comments to the comment bank.

Add an existing comment to the comment bank

    • If you're using Assignments outside your LMS, click the assignment and then the student's document.
    • If you're using Assignments LTI within your LMS, click the assignment and then Open in Assignments and then the student's document.

  3. In the top-right corner, click Comment bank Comment bank.
  4. To add your comment to the comment bank, in the top-right corner of the comment box, click More More and select Add to comment bank.

  5. (Optional) Edit your comment.
  6. Click Add.

Enter a comment directly into the comment bank

    • If you're using Assignments outside your LMS, click the assignment and then the student's document.
    • If you're using Assignments LTI within your LMS, click the assignment and then Open in Assignments and then the student's document.

  3. In the top-right corner, click Comment bank Comment bank.
  4. Click Add to bank and then enter your comment and then click Add.

Note: To access and modify your comment bank, you have to open an assignment.

See all your saved comments in the comment bank

    • If you're using Assignments LTI within your LMS, click the assignment and then Open in Assignments and then the student's document.

  3. In the top-right corner, click Comment bank Comment bank.
  4. Scroll up or down the list of your saved comments.
  5. (Optional) For more options, place your cursor next to a comment and click More More.
Find and use a comment in the comment bank

You have 3 ways to search for, and then use, comment bank comments.

Use hash and autocomplete

To make it easy to find a comment, Assignments autocompletes content you enter after a hash (#). As you enter the content, a list of matching comments open. This list narrows as you enter more characters.

    • If you're using Assignments LTI within your LMS, click the assignment and then Open in Assignments and then the student's document.

  3. Highlight text and click Add a comment Add comment.
  4. In the comment box, enter # and then enter a keyword or phrase.

Use only a hash

  1. Open a student assignment in the grading tool.
  2. Highlight text and click Add comment Add comment.
  3. In the comment box, enter only a hash (#). The 5 most recently used comments open.

Search

  1. In the grading tool, click Comment bank Comment bank and then Search Search.
  2. Point to the comment you want to use, click More Moreand then Copy to clipboard.
  3. In the comment box, paste the comment.
  4. (Optional) Personalize the comment.
  5. Click Comment.
Edit a comment in the comment bank

    • If you're using Assignments LTI within your LMS, click the assignment and then Open in Assignments and then the student's document.

  3. In the top-right corner, click Comment bank Comment bank.
  4. Point to the comment you want to edit and then click Comment options Moreand then Edit.
  5. Enter your changes and click Save.
Copy a comment in the comment bank

    • If you're using Assignments LTI within your LMS, click the assignment and then Open in Assignments and then the student's document.

  3. In the top-right corner, click Comment bank Comment bank.
  4. Point to the comment you want to copy and then click Comment options Moreand then Copy to clipboard.
    The comment is copied to the clipboard.
Delete a comment from the comment bank

    • If you're using Assignments outside your LMS, click the assignment and then the student's document.
    • If you're using Assignments LTI within your LMS, click the assignment and then Open in Assignments and then the student's document.

  3. In the top-right corner, click Comment bank Comment bank.
  4. Point to the comment you want to remove and then click Comment options Moreand then Delete.
  5. Click Delete again.
Provide overall feedback

    • If you're using Assignments outside your LMS, click the assignment and then the student's document.
    • If you're using Assignments LTI within your LMS, click the assignment and then Open in Assignments and then the student's document.

  3. Click Grading Grading.
  4. Under Overall feedback, enter your feedback.
    The comment saves automatically. 

Switch to another student's assignment

To go to another student’s assignment while grading, choose one:

  • Click the Down arrow Down Arrow and choose a student's name.

  • Click Back Back or Next Next.
    Select student

Open the hidden toolbar menus

To access File, Edit, and other menus, on the right side of the toolbar, click the Down arrow Down Arrow. You can also open the toolbar menus with the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + F.
