Give feedback on assignments

Important: This only applies to assignments graded with Google Assignments.

While reviewing assignments, you can give feedback with in-line suggestions and margin comments.

If you enter the same comment for many students, you can save time by adding it to the comment bank for later use. You can also paste a prepared list of comments into the bank. The comment bank is tied to your Google Account, so you can use stored comments from any device.

Add, save, or find comments

Add comments to an assignment
  1. Go to your LMS.
  2. Click the assignmentand thenthe student's document.
    The file opens in the grading tool.
  3. Highlight the passage you want to comment onand thenclick Add comment 
  4. Enter your commentand thenclick Comment.
Add and save comments to use later

You have 2 ways to add comments to the comment bank.

Add an existing comment to the comment bank

  1. Go to your LMS.
  2. Click the assignmentand thenthe student's document.
    The file opens in the grading tool.
  3. In the top-right corner, click Comment bank .
  4. To add your comment to the bank, in the top-right corner of the comment box, click More  and select Add to comment bank
  5. (Optional) Edit your comment.
  6. Click Add.

Enter a comment directly into the comment bank

  1. Go to your LMS.

  2. Click the assignmentand thenthe student's document.
    The file opens in the grading tool.
  3. In the top-right corner, click Comment bank .
  4. Click Add to bankand thenenter your commentand thenclick Add.

Note: To view or update your comment bank, you have to open an assignment.

Go to your saved comments in the comment bank

  1. Go to your LMS.
  2. Click the assignmentand thenthe student's document.
    The file opens in the grading tool.
  3. In the top-right corner, click Comment bank .
  4. Scroll up or down the list of your saved comments.
  5. (Optional) For more options, place your cursor next to a comment and click More .
Find and use a comment in the comment bank

You have 3 ways to search for and then use comment bank comments. 

Use hash and autocomplete

To make it easy to find a comment, Assignments autocompletes content you enter after a hash (#). As you enter the content, a list of matching comments opens. This list narrows as you enter more characters.

  1. Go to your LMS.
  2. Click the assignmentand thenthe student's document.
    The file opens in the grading tool.
  3. Highlight text and click Add comment .
  4. In the comment box, enter # and thenenter a keyword or phrase.
    Assignments autocompletes suggestions as you type.
  5. To insert a comment, click the commentand thenComment.

Use only a hash

  1. Open a student assignment in the grading tool.
  2. Highlight text and click Add comment .
  3. In the comment box, enter only a hash (#). The 5 most recently used comments open.

Search

  1. In the grading tool, click Comment bank and thenSearch .
  2. Point to the comment you want to use, click More and thenCopy to clipboard.
  3. In the comment box, paste the comment.
  4. (Optional) Personalize the comment.
  5. Click Comment.
Provide overall feedback
You can provide overall feedback for a student. 
  1. Go to your LMS.
  2. Click the assignmentand thenthe student's document.
    The file opens in the grading tool.
  3. Click Grading .
  4. Under Overall feedback, enter your feedback.
    Note: You might have to scroll down to see this option.

    The comment saves automatically.

Edit, copy, or delete a comment 

Edit a comment in the comment bank
  1. Go to your LMS.
  2. Click the assignmentand thenthe student's document.
    The file opens in the grading tool.
  3. In the top-right corner, click Comment bank .
  4. Point to the comment you want to editand thenclick Comment options and thenEdit.
  5. Enter your changes and click Save.
Copy a comment in the comment bank
  1. Go to your LMS.
  2. Click the assignmentand thenthe student's document.
    The file opens in the grading tool.
  3. In the top-right corner, click Comment bank .
  4. Point to the comment you want to copyand thenclick Comment options and thenCopy to clipboard.
    The comment is copied to the clipboard.
Delete a comment from the comment bank
  1. Go to your LMS.
  2. Click the assignmentand thenthe student's document.
    The file opens in the grading tool.
  3. In the top-right corner, click Comment bank .
  4. Point to the comment you want to removeand thenclick Comment options and thenDelete.
  5. Click Delete again.

Switch students or view menus  

Switch to another student's assignment

To go to another student’s assignment while grading, choose one:

  • Click the Down arrow and choose a student's name.

  • Click Back  or Next .

Open the hidden toolbar menus

To view File, Edit, and other menus, choose an option:
  • At the right of the toolbar, click the Down arrow  for Show the menus.
  • Use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + Shift + F
