If you create an assignment in Canvas, you can use SpeedGrader to grade students’ Google Drive files. However, you won’t be able to use the features included in Assignments.
Step 1: Create an assignment
- Sign in to Canvas.
- Open the course.
- In the sidebar, click Assignments
Add Assignment.
- Enter a name and description for your assignment.
- (Optional) To add a point value and due date, enter the details.
- Under Submission Type, click the Down arrow

check the File Uploads box.
- (Optional) To add a Google Docs file template and make a copy for each student:
- Above the assignment description, click Insert
Link
External Links.
- Under Link, enter the URL for the Docs file.
- At the end of the file’s URL, change /edit to /copy.
When a student clicks the URL, they’re asked to make a copy of the file.
- Above the assignment description, click Insert
- Click Save or Save & Publish.
Step 2: Students turn in their work
When students are ready, they submit their work by following these steps:
- Sign in to Canvas.
- Open the course.
- Click Assignments

- Click Google Drive
Select file.
- Select the Drive file
click Add
Attach.
- Click Submit Assignment.
