Images embedded in KMZ files not shown?

Hello!

I have a simple KMZ file with one embedded image. When I open this in Google Earth on my Mac everything is fine. But when I open it in Google Earth for iOS the picture is not shown. When I select the pin I get an empty screen with a dotted square in the top left corner.

Samples are attached and can also be found here:

Any suggestions how to fix this?

Best regards, Klaas.

The structure of your KMZ is as follows:

  Length      Date    Time    Name
---------  ---------- -----   ----
   187509  03/14/2013 19:29   4C5D6BD8-182D-4806-832E-BEF0899E344A.jpg
      447  03/14/2013 20:05   doc.kml
        0  03/14/2013 20:06   __MACOSX/
      171  03/14/2013 20:05   __MACOSX/._doc.kml
---------                     -------
   188127                     4 files

Would suggest making the "doc.kml" the first file in you KMZ file. Might make a difference on iOS.
If that doesn't work try a smaller test image and/or a .png to verify it's working as you expect it to.

Jason, thanks for you suggestions!

Unfortunately they brought no success. I attached two more versions. test2.kmz with a smaller Jpeg image and test3.kmz with a Png. They both work fine on OSX, but they again don't show the image under iOS.

Could you try to load them under iOS? Do you have another idea, what I could try?

Looks like iOS may not support embedded imagery in KMZ files. Looks like a bug to me.
I've flagged this for Google to review.

In meanwhile you can workaround this by posting images separately then use absolute URLs to refer to those images in your KML/KMZ files. Not great but at least inline images work this way.

Hi Jason,

thanks for flagging this issue for Google to review.

I just tried your suggestion and used an http source for the img tag and this actually works well.

Right now I don't have a location to put my image files on the internet, but I'll figure it out. It would be great to see this issue fixed in one of the next releases.

Thank you very much and best regards, klaas.
