Import your KML map data into Google Earth

You can view and share Google Earth information using KML files. You’ll see placemarks, satellite images, and other geographic info.

Learn what KML files are.

If you have a KML file from previous versions of Google Earth, you can view the saved places in Google Earth on web.

  • First, to view KML files, click Menu Menu and then Settings Settings and then Enable KML file import and then Save.
  • Your saved places will only appear on the device on which you saved them.
  1. Using Google Chrome on your computer, open Google Earth.
  2. On the left, click My Places My Places.
  3. Click Import KML file.
  4. Choose the location of the file you want to upload.
  5. Select and open the KML file. A preview of the list will open in Google Earth.
  6. To keep these places in your list, click Save.

The locations will be saved to My Places.

Info you can import and export

You can view most simple KML files using Google Earth for Chrome (version 9).

If you have trouble viewing more complex KML files, try using Google Earth for desktop (version 7), which supports all KML features.

Here's a list of what you can do now with Google Earth for Chrome.

What you can import now

  • Some custom icons and overlay images hosted on other websites won’t work.
