See borders & labels

Learn more about places you visit by looking at the political and historical borders, as well as coastlines.

You can also see the names of different locations and features, like bodies of water and mountain ranges.

Turn on borders & labels

Computers

You can see both borders and labels in Google Earth for computers.

  1. Open Google Earth.
  2. In the left-hand panel under "Layers," check Borders and Labels.
Android

You can see labels in the Google Earth app for Android.

  1. Open the Google Earth app.
  2. In the upper left corner, tap Menu Menu.
  3. Under "Layers," make sure Roads & Labels is checked.
iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

You can see both borders and labels in the Google Earth app.

  1. Open the Google Earth app.
  2. In the upper left corner, tap Menu Menu.
  3. Under "Layers," make sure Borders & Labels is checked.

Choose which types of borders you see

In Google Earth on your computer, you can see several types of borders:

  1. In the left-hand panel under "Layers" and then "Borders & Labels," check Borders and Labels.
  2. Under Borders, check the boxes for the types of borders you want to see:
    • International borders: A solid yellow line shows countries, a solid red line shows boundaries disputed by different countries, and a solid orange line shows where there are provisional boundaries and boundaries defined by treaties.
    • Country names: The names of countries and regions show up when you zoom in on different places
    • Coastlines: A thin yellow line shows where the land ends and an ocean or sea begins
    • 1st Level Admin Borders (States/Provinces): A light purple line shows up when you zoom in on a state or province
    • 1st Level Admin Names (States/Provinces): The name of a state or province shows up as you zoom in
    • 2nd Level Admin Regions (Counties): A pale green line shows up where there are county boundaries
  3. Uncheck any borders you don’t want to see on the map.

Choose which labels you see

In Google Earth and Earth Pro for computers, you can see several types of labels.

  1. In the left-hand panel under "Layers" and then "Borders & Labels," click the right arrow next to "Labels" .
  2. Under Labels, select which types of labels you want to see.
  3. Uncheck any labels you don’t want to see on the map.
