Search for places in Google Earth

Find places or things to do by searching in Google Earth. Be as specific or general in your searches as you want to be.

What you can search for

Find places or things to do by doing a search. You can look for:

  • Cities, states, & countries
  • Street addresses
  • Zip codes & postal codes
  • Latitudes & longitudes
  • General things, such as coffee in New York City

Find a place

Computers
  1. Open Google Earth.
  2. In the upper part of the left hand panel under “Search,” click in the Search box.
  3. Type in the place you’re looking for using one of these formats:
    • City, State: Buffalo, NY
    • City, Country: London, England
    • Street name: Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA
    • Specific address: with number, street name, city, state, and country, such as 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington, DC or Via Vittorio Veneto, 119, 00187 Roma, Italy
    • Zip code or Postal code: 94043 or EC1A1AH
    • Longitude, Latitude: in decimal format, such as 37.7, -122.2 or using DMS format, such as 37 25'19.07"N, 122 05'06.24"W
    • General things: coffee in NYC or amusement parks in Asia
  4. Press the Enter button.
  5. Earth will zoom into that location on the map.
  6. To close Search, in the left hand panel under “Search,” go to the lower left corner and click X.
Androids
  1. Open the Google Earth app.
  2. In the upper right corner of the screen, touch the Search icon Google Play Search .
  3. Touch the Search box.
  4. Type in the place you’re looking for using one of these formats:
    • City, State: Buffalo, NY
    • City, Country: London, England
    • Street name: Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA
    • Specific address: with number, street name, city, state, such as 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington, DC or Via Vittorio Veneto, 119, 00187 Roma, Italy
    • Zip code or Postal code: 94043 or EC1A1AH
    • Longitude, Latitude: in decimal format, such as 37.7, -122.2 or using DMS format, such as 37 25'19.07"N, 122 05'06.24"W

  5. Earth will zoom in on that place.
  6. To close Search, to the left of the Search box, touch X.
iPhone or iPad
  1. Open the Google Earth app.
  2. In the upper right corner of the screen, touch the Search icon Google Play Search .
  3. Touch the Search box.
  4. Type in the place you’re looking for using one of these formats:
    • City, State: Buffalo, NY
    • City, Country: London, England
    • Street name: Hollywood Blvd, Hollywood, CA
    • Specific address: with number, street name, city, state, such as 1600 Pennsylvania Ave, Washington, DC or Via Vittorio Veneto, 119, 00187 Roma, Italy
    • Zip code or Postal code: 94043 or EC1A1AH

  5. Earth will zoom in on that place.
  6. To close Search, to the left of the Search box, touch X.

View or delete searches

You can see or delete previous Google Earth search results on your computer any time.

See a list of previous search results

Google Earth saves your most recent searches. You’ll see them in a drop-down list when you start typing in the Search box.

You can also look at a list of previous searches:

  1. In the left hand panel under “Search,” find the Search box.
  2. On the lower right under the Search box, click History. To the left of “Search History,” you’ll see a checkmark icon Chrome mobile checkmark icon.
  3. If the Search History isn’t already open, go to the end of the row, then click the plus sign +. You’ll see a list of folders for each place you’ve searched for.
  4. To open a folder, to to the end of that row and click the +. You’ll see a list of search results underneath.
  5. Double-click on the link for any of the places you want to see. You’ll see Earth zoom in on the location.

Note: If there are no saved search results, you’ll see a message that says “Your search history is empty.”

Clear previous searches

  1. In the left hand panel under “Search,” find the Search box.
  2. On the lower right under the Search box, click History.
  3. In the bottom right corner of the “Search” section, click Clear History.

Note: The Clear History button shows up at the end of the list of your search results. If you haven’t cleared your history in a while, you might have to scroll until you see it.
