Orphan files not orphan files as never been shared and are owned by person indicated

Google Drive is reporting that files are orphaned. Google explanation is flies that have been shared and then deleted and so are orphaned as they have been moved to the root folder. This is not the case as have users that My Drives and files are being flagged as orphaned and they have not been shared and have always been owned by the individual highlighted. We need to identify the reason these are being highlighted as orphan when they are not.

Hi Lee Palmer!

First, you indicated that you "have users"- does this mean that the accounts in question are business/professional/organizational account types (@domain-name.com types), or are you somehow referring to using personal Google Accounts (@gmail.com types) but in some sort of non-personal use?

Files can be orphaned if they have been placed in a folder, and then that folder was shared to other accounts, and then one of those accounts deleted that parent folder. The parent folder is removed, but the files and folders within that parent folder still exist- so they are orphaned.

To ensure your scenario is fully understood, please create a tree structure representation of one example of the problem. For example if the file ABC.txt was "orphaned" please indicate something similar to:

Computers\My Computer\Groups Data\ABC.txt

or

My Drive\Groups Data\ABC.txt

Just create a similar indicator of exactly where the file should be located prior to it being orphaned.

Looking forward to seeing your replies!

Hi @MisterCanada

Yes they are business accounts.

In this scenario the ones that were highlighted were owned by the user and had not been shared. Also they have said that they were not in a folder that was deleted, hence the confusion.

It seems My Drives mainly with numerous folder structures are involved as well as numerous users.

Thanks Lee Palmer!

There can be significant differences in functionality and features between personal Google Account Drive usage (this community) and G Suite Account Drive usage.

As such, I am going to recommend you crosscheck with the G Suite Help Community, where experts on those products/services are deployed. Here is a link to that community:

Thanks!
